JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

GROUNDS:

Daily work will involve active participation in all grounds maintenance efforts including: mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pruning, spraying, pruning, and assisting with equipment preventative maintenance.

Inform supervisor of supplies, tools, parts, and chemicals as needed

Carry out landscaping plans including grading, planting, and pruning
Participate in snow removal work including shoveling by hand where needed

Assist in the preparation of seed beds, plantings, and transplanting
Consistently performs all job responsibilities with all safety and applicable regulations taken into consideration, including the proper use of personal protective equipment

Perform all grounds care operations efficiently and thoroughly

Assist with maintaining bike racks, outdoor seating and tables

Properly maintain all grounds areas for university rental properties, Park Woods, and Park Cabin

Assist with maintaining and repairing university-owned streets, parking lots, and sidewalks

GENERAL

Work with the Grounds Supervisor in establishing priorities and recommending major purchases

Assist other FM personnel as requested


OCCASIONAL DUTIES:

  • Assists Auxiliary Services staff in moving large furniture items and heavy equipment around campus.

2. Participate in setup and preparation for Commencement and Homecoming events.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: High School Graduate. Virginia licenses and certifications needed for the application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides are beneficial. Ability to understand horticultural manuals and other professional materials related to job responsibilities.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of two years Grounds work experience operating power lawn and grounds equipment and motor vehicles. Valid Virginia driver’s license with a good driving record is required. Previous experience operating trucks, lawn equipment, hand and power tools is necessary.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good coordination to operate groundskeeping equipment, power tools, and motor vehicles. Must be able to lift and manipulate at least 80 lbs. Must be able to stoop, bend, climb, and lift. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather is required. Must not show allergic reactions to chemical substances and common environmental factors.

SPECIAL SKILLS: Good communication skills are required. Mechanical aptitude is necessary. Ability to operate a variety of motor vehicles and power equipment is required. Must be accessible and available in the event of emergencies, inclement weather, and when needed to meet the ongoing missions of the university. Willing to provide pleasant, efficient service to the EMU community.

OTHER: Must be able to follow instructions from his/her supervisor and work with minimal supervision. Must be able to handle stress situations and demonstrate flexibility at all times. Seeking a mature individual who possesses personal initiative, honesty, and dependability.
