The Global Product Owner (PO) is a key element within Baxter, empowered with the Product Vision that will help to achieve the Roadmap designed by our company for the future. PO’s have a fundamental tactical role requiring a good degree of functional expertise, ultimately responsible for “what gets built” and prioritizing of deliverables in the overall Program Backlog.
This position will serve as a liaison between Product and Development, ensuring the correct translation of customer needs (both internal and external) and business stakeholders into added values features/enhancements for the Product under their area of responsibility. The Global PO requires a mix of business process knowledge and understanding agile methodology.
What you will be doing
Preparation and Participation in PI Planning
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders to fully distinguish between needs and wants; identify priorities and cultivate collaboration between functions, manage roadmap and formulate business priorities to the agile team that can deliver the solution.
- Support digital initiatives through tight integration of standards and process into the digital platforms.
- As a member of the extended Product Management team, the PO is heavily involved in program backlog refinement and prep for Program Increment (PI) planning and also plays a significant role in the planning event itself. Before the planning event, the PO updates the team backlog and typically reviews and contributes to the program vision, roadmap, and content presentations.
- During the event, the PO is involved with story definition, providing the clarifications necessary to assist the team with their story estimates and sequencing. The entire Agile team, which includes the PO, also work together to determine their team PI objectives for the upcoming PI.
Iteration Execution
- Maintaining the team backlog – With input from System Architect/Engineering and other stakeholders, the PO has the primary responsibility for building, editing, and maintaining the team backlog. Consisting mostly of user stories, it also includes defects and enablers. Backlog items are prioritized based on user value, time, and other team dependencies determined in the PI planning meeting and refined during the PI.
- Iteration Planning – The PO reviews and reprioritizes the backlog as part of the prep work for Iteration Planning, including coordination of dependencies with other POs. During the iteration planning meeting, the PO communicates story detail and priorities and ensures the team aligns and agrees on a final iteration plan.
- Just-in-time story elaboration – Most backlog items are elaborated into user stories for implementation. This may happen before the iteration, during iteration planning, or during the iteration. While any team member can write stories and acceptance criteria, the PO maintains proper flow.
- Apply Behavior-Driven Development (BDD) – POs collaborate with their team to detail stories with acceptance criteria and examples in the form of acceptance tests.
- Accepting stories – The PO works with the team to agree on accepted story completion. This includes validating that the story meets acceptance criteria, that it has the appropriate, persistent acceptance tests, and that it otherwise complies with its Definition of Done (DoD). In so doing, the PO also assures a level of quality, focusing primarily on fitness for use.
- Understand enabler work – While POs are not expected to drive technological decisions, they are supposed to understand the scope of the upcoming enabler work and collaborate with System and Solution Architect/Engineering to assist with decision-making and sequencing of the critical technological infrastructures that will host the new business functionality.
- Participate in team demo and retrospective – POs collaborate with their team and any other stakeholders in the team demo. They also participate in the Iteration Retrospective, where the teams gather to improve their processes and are active in the Agile Release Train’s (ART’s) Inspect and Adapt (I&A) workshop.
Program Execution
Each PO must have a clear understanding of users’ needs, the business objectives, and the stakeholders’ vision so they can quickly make decisions.
POs:
- Maximize return on investment of the digital platforms by helping the business to leverage the full capabilities of the ecosystem.
- Are empowered and autonomous – POs escalate critical items but avoid decision by committee.
- Define business requirements together with other business stakeholders and conduct prioritization discussions to meet business objectives.
- Analyze various options through business analysis-related work and provide a recommendation on the best approaches to solve specific business issues.
- Lead regular updates to leadership and stakeholders in collaboration with system owner.
- Prepare Flow diagrams, mockups, active in product design and UI/UX to help visualize and describe the process.
- Write and prioritize user stories on the team backlog. Ensure the backlog is populated with enough prioritized user stories that are ready to be estimated for the next two sprints. Plus keep MVP and Priority in mind.
- Communicate often and openly with the team by being responsive.
- Collaborate with the team to ensure the users’ needs are met and that the backlog reflects the most up to date design decisions so development can move forward with confidence.
- Accept finished stories in a timely manner so that any changes or rejections can be handled by the team before further development in that same area is done.
- Attend the daily scrum meetings, demos, retrospectives and provide input on the day-to-day processes that are working or not working.
- Collaborate with Global Product Management to harmonize solutions globally, report status and remain in line with feature priority.
- Write UAT scripts and support the change management and deployment team for the development of training material, UAT and deployment readiness. Support Hypercare activities and Report progress.
- Accountable for ensuring all GxP relevant systems and processes are validated.
- Champion change – promote and drive the change and new ways of working.
- Drive the development and adoption of next generation technologies and business practices.

- Able to read, write and speak English proficiently.
- Bilingual Spanish preferred.
