Michael Baker’s first office in Alaska opened in 1942. Since then, we have played a key role in some of Alaska’s most renowned infrastructure projects, including groundbreaking projects on the North Slope and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline System. We continue to focus on cold regions engineering—pipelines and associated facilities, buildings, transportation, hydrology, geotechnical, specialty professional services, permitting and regulatory compliance, and GIS and LiDAR mapping. DESCRIPTION
Michael Baker seeks a full time Geotechnical Engineer with 10 or more years’ experience to join our Alaska operation. The successful candidate will work in applying geotechnical engineering techniques, procedures and principles on a variety of civil and geotechnical engineering projects while supporting our project teams and client base that we service on a local and national basis. Projects can span all major areas within the Transportation, Oil & Gas, Federal, Commercial, and Mining market sectors. This leadership position will be an integral part of Michael Baker’s overall business execution and growth strategy in Alaska.

General description of work activities include, but not limited to:

  • Evaluate geotechnical reports provided by our clients, determine engineering properties and provide foundation recommendations.
  • Prepare and manage geotechnical field exploration and external laboratory testing programs.
  • Maintain a high level of excellence regarding Health, Safety and Environmental for colleagues and our clients.
  • Prepare geotechnical reports detailing subsurface investigations, foundation recommendations, construction monitoring and quality assurance/control phases of work and other field / laboratory studies.
  • Perform and direct others with analyses for design of shallow and deep foundations, earth retaining structures, and slope stabilization systems.
  • Conducts site visits, perform construction monitoring and attend client meetings.
  • Communicate with clients regarding project issues, project controls and attends meetings.
  • Defines scope of work, man-hour requirements, subcontractor fees and responsible for ensuring that task and project schedules and budgets are met.
  • Responsible for maintaining technical knowledge through completion of various training initiatives.
  • Lead, assign and review work of the project delivery team and provide technical guidance and oversight; check work, progress and identify changes of scope and additional services to ensure quality project delivery.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentor junior staff on specific tasks.
  • Prepares scope of work and cost estimates for proposals.
  • Satisfy project requirements by ensuring that quality standards and deadlines are met.
  • Participates in internal and external professional development activities.
  • Assists with marketing and business development efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • BS degree in Civil Engineering or similar
  • Alaska PE license.
  • 10 plus years of experience in cold regions geology, geotechnical design and project management.
  • Experience with permafrost engineering and thermal modeling.
  • Strong analytical and technical report writing skills, as well as spreadsheet.
  • Experience in leading and mentoring junior level Geotechnical Engineers and Geologists.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and to research and troubleshoot problems as they arise.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet budgets and deliverable deadlines.

PREFERENCES

  • Masters or other advanced degree
  • Proficient AutoCAD, GeoStudio products.
  • Experience in rock mechanics/geologic engineering and earthquake engineering.
  • Engaged in local and international professional organizations is preferred.
