Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Chair of the Communication Department, the General Manager for Student Media Operations (also known as The Media Hub) is responsible for providing leadership to the student newspaper The Columbia Chronicle, the student magazine Echo, the student news broadcast Newsbeat, and other student media outlets, including the ChicagoTalks and AustinTalks community websites. The General Manager is responsible for fostering a culture of journalistic, advertising, and promotional excellence, and providing leadership and professional training for students engaged in various media platforms as well as providing experiences that prepare students for post-graduate employment. The General Manager is also responsible for building mutual beneficial partnerships within the Communication Department and with the campus community, business community, and professional associations and groups, as well as generating revenue streams, when appropriate.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Contribute to the strategic mission and vision of the department by modeling an inclusive culture that promotes innovation and the utilization of best practices.
- Support WCRX operations and Communication faculty to strengthen student learning and produce professional media content and quality journalism.
- Work with faculty across departments as needed to utilize multimedia production spaces as part of the Communication Department’s Media Hub.
- Ensure production deadlines (digital, print, and broadcast) for the various student media outlets, in consultation with faculty advisers are met.
- Monitor website performance.
- Monitor, troubleshoot and resolve WordPress issues, including management of back-end plugins, tools, and database; broadcast issues across platforms including but not limited to live and recorded video and podcast.
- Monitor on-site technology performance and submit maintenance tickets as needed.
- Support training of student workers on the use of necessary software.
- Work with the Assistant Dean and the Chair on the annual budget for The Chronicle and associated student media operations. Manage the budget on a day-to-day basis.
- Assist in the hiring of students, in consultation with other faculty and the chair. Manage and approve student payroll.
- Oversee student staff selling ads, sponsorships, and other revenue-generating activities.
- Develop, implement, and review advertising, marketing and promotional plans and appropriate rates for the student media outlets.
- Manage vendor relations and maintain up-to-date contracts, licenses, registrations, and association memberships
- Maintain general oversight and ensure accuracy of internal accounting records, including accounts receivable and invoicing requests.
- Manage the distribution of The Columbia Chronicle and Echo magazine print issues and online publication of content, as well as associated digital and print archives.
- Maintain archive of all student media outlets.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned or required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
- At least five years industry experience required.
- Prior media management and sales experience in print and digital, preferred.
- Experience in college student media or related industry, including print, media, web, and digital media a plus.
- Track record of exhibiting leadership behavior and creating a positive, motivating, and productive team environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish detailed production timelines and manage workflow to meet deadlines.
- Ability to manage multiple, diverse projects at one time is essential.
