DEFINITION

This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Public Works vehicles and equipment, including specialized equipment necessary for utility operations. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

~ Troubleshoots and diagnoses mechanical problems for a variety of light, heavy and specialized vehicles and equipment.
~ Services, repairs, modifies, restores and maintains all vehicles and equipment; performs welding, metal fabrication, body work, hydraulics fabrication and repair.
~ Ensures the safe operation, maintenance, and security of all equipment, tools and vehicles; identifies needed supplies; processes hazardous waste in an appropriate manner.
~ Ensures that all vehicles and equipment are prepared for seasonal operations or weather events; installs sanding/plowing apparatus or other necessary attachments.
~ Assists other City Departments in maintenance and repair of vehicles or equipment as directed.
~ Participates in all snow and ice removal operations or other emergency situations; operates specialty equipment to mix sand and salt for ice control operations; loads mixtures into vehicles for distribution on roadways.
~ Understands and follows all safety regulations.
~ Assists other Divisions as directed.
~ May be required to perform responsibilities of subordinate positions.
~ Performs similar or related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience - EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or equivalent; one to three years of experience repairing and maintaining light, heavy and specialized motor equipment; equivalent combination of education and experience.
Licensing Requirements - CDL Class B and MA Hoisting Engineer license 2B required at time of hire. Additional licenses are required after date of hire and are defined in the IUOE, Local #98 Union contract. Knowledge, Ability and Skills - KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, AND SKILLS

Knowledge: Knowledge of repair and maintenance of light and heavy vehicles and equipment; knowledge of welding; knowledge of repairing electrical and electronic systems; knowledge of conducting safety inspections for all types of vehicles and equipment.

Abilities: Ability to use current software programs and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot problems with equipment and vehicles; ability to operate machinery and tools; ability to perform auto body work; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Skills: Computer skills; record keeping skills; proficiency with diagnostic software. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
PHYSICAL, MOTOR, AND VISUAL SKILLS

Physical Skills: Work requires moderate physical strength and effort daily, such as lifting heavy objects, carrying the object(s) and stacking them or placing them in a vehicle or storage area. In addition, pulling, pushing, standing or walking or lifting heavy objects (up to 75 lbs) for the full work day may be involved.

Motor Skills: Duties may involve a high degree of intense mental concentration together with hand and eye coordination and visual attention for long periods of time; the operation of heavy trucks or equipment may be required for long periods of time.

Visual Skills: Essential position functions require the ability to operate a motor vehicle, specialized heavy motor equipment and small tools. In addition, essential position functions require good close/distant and peripheral vision, as well as depth perception.
MISC. INFORMATION
Anticipated Hourly Hiring Range: $21.19-$23.85
Additional Stipend of $1.00 per hour for CDL License.
