Unit Mission Statement
Ensure the accuracy and reliability of data within the Banner Finance System and the Commonwealth Cardinal Finance System to facilitate effective financial information for university management and reporting purposes.

Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager of Data Control, the Financial Systems Accountant directs the data control function for the university by ensuring that all accounting records are properly documented and accurately recorded in the university’s Banner Finance System and the Commonwealth’s Cardinal Finance System.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
  • Certify and approve financial data from Deposit Certificates transmitted to Cardinal and transmit payroll transactions to Cardinal.
  • Analyze transfer and miscellaneous cash transaction documents along with appropriate backup to ensure complete mathematical accuracy and conformity to Federal, State and university guidelines.
  • Maintain bank activity records and reconcile bank account cash activity within the Banner system.
  • Prepare bank transfer entries to record the cash transfer for payments made by wire transfer.
  • Maintain full conversancy in all areas of the Data Control department.
  • Perform data analysis using reporting software such as QLIK, Discoverer, SQL and DOA’s Cardinal reporting.
  • Maintain documentation for all duties and responsibilities of the Data Control department in accordance with the Commonwealth’s Agency Risk Management and Internal Controls Standards (ARMICS) guidelines.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, management, business or similar OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), with the ability to interpret and apply procedures in accordance with federal, state, and university policies.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform accounting responsibilities using automated accounting or financial systems and accurately reconcile data.
  • Proficiency in a variety of software applications and automated systems including Microsoft Office Suite 365.
  • Knowledge of reporting systems, with the ability to create reports.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, tact, and diplomacy in all interactions, while exercising sound judgment in performing all responsibilities.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills, with the ability to set priorities and manage high work standards of quality, accuracy, and documentation.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team and manage multiple and competing priorities concurrently within a deadline-driven environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge or working knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s accounting system (Cardinal) and the various state-specific fiscal process and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle and enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) systems.
  • Experience with the Ellucian Banner (finance) system.
  • Experience with SQL-based reporting.
