Your Opportunity
We are looking for an entry-level field biologist/environmental scientist. You will be assisting our team of environmental professionals with fieldwork in South Florida and across the Gulf Coast. This work primarily supports ecological and botanical work in the Everglades (marsh, mangrove and tree islands), but may also include delineation and assessment of upland and wetland habitats, wildlife surveys, and other data collection and analysis in support of new and ongoing projects as needed. This work is being conducted to support restoration and environmental management efforts.
You will also assist project teams and senior level staff with data entry and writing reports as part of a fast-paced and tight-knit technical team. This applied science position challenges the selected individual to bring their technical expertise to a rigorous yet rewarding work environment.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Conduct environmental (plant, water and soil) monitoring in accordance with applicable agency regulations
- Conduct botanical identification of South Florida wetland and tree island species
- Conduct wildlife surveys and habitat assessments for listed species
- Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data
- Prepare report documentation and supporting materials for client and regulatory agency submittals
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Previous field experience and skills in an applicable science/discipline (e.g., ecology, botany, wetland science, soil science, wetland science) strongly preferred.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Superb observation skills and strong attention to detail.
- A positive attitude in all working conditions.
- Individual must have computer and technology skills. Experience with GPS and digital field collection equipment is a plus.
- Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work in rural wilderness settings.
- Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and exhibit that they possess the tools to promote safe behavior.
- First Aid/CPR training preferred.
- Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license.
- Experience operating field vehicles (e.g., 4-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and boats) is a plus
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods (up to 50% of the time) including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
Education and Experience
The ideal candidate will have at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Wetland ecology, or related natural resources field). One to three years of experience conducting applied environmental field surveys is desired. Experience with Trimble hand-held GPS units or other similar GPS-based survey and data collection equipment is a plus.
Position will work in both a field and office setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Must be available to travel for out of town projects when needed.
