Reporting to the President of Fort Steilacoom of Pierce College District, the Education Coordinator/Instructor at the Special Commitment Center will be initiating, implementing, and maintaining education programs and services, teaching Adult Basic Education and pre-vocational classes, and supervising one full-time instructor and part-time instructors as needed.About the DistrictThe college enjoys a strong presence in the community and participates in numerous partnerships with business, community, government, and educational organizations.Pierce College at Fort SteilacoomLocated on a beautiful 140-acre site adjacent to a 340-acre community, recreational park, and Waughop Lake. Pierce College at SCCThe Special Commitment Center is a highly structured and secure treatment setting located on McNeil Island in the beautiful Puget Sound. Our program treats individuals who are detained and/or civilly committed under RCW 71.09 and assists them in addressing their sexual offending and unique individual treatment needs.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Education Coordinator/Instructor will be responsible for the following, but not limited to: AdministrationCoordinate and perform all administrative functions necessary for the SCC resident education program to operate successfully, including but not limited to the following: developing educational and psycho-educational class schedules; monitoring all curricula development and implementation; hiring, training, and supervising all Pierce College staff; acting as a liaison between the SCC administration and Pierce College administration; coordinating educational programs with the SCC clinical treatment teams and the SCC vocational program manager; and monitoring the yearly contract budget and accompanying fiscal responsibilities.Reporting Requirements Submit the following documentation and reports to the SCC Clinical Director or designee and the SCC Clinical Treatment Team (specific submission dates shall be determined by the SCC Clinical Director or designee at the beginning of each education program period): resident attendance records and progress notes for each course taught to SCC residents by Instructor; and a report at the end of each quarter describing the classes and Psycho-Educational Modules taught to SCC residents by Instructor, including expected student outcomes and whether students met these expectations, the methods used to ensure resident success in completing each course (i.e. homework, classroom discussion, oral presentations, exams, attendance requirements) and any concerns or problems encountered, etc.Open LabThe following five (5) programs and classes run concurrently during open lab time: Technology Lab- Instruct SCC residents in the appropriate use of computer technology to support class objectives, fulfill treatment goals, and prepare residents for transition into the community.Adult Basic Education (ABE) Courses- Instruct SCC Special Needs Residents in ABE courses that meet requirements of the Washington State Office of Adult Literacy Basic Skills Competencies.College-level Courses- Coordinate academic courses required for SCC residents to earn Associate and Bachelor Degrees.General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Preparation- Instruct SCC Residents in the following five (5) academic areas: math, arts and literature, social studies, writing, and science as needed to qualify and test for a GED.WorkshopsFacilitate Brighter Futures workshops for SCC residents in the areas of media and culture, arts and literature, sports and recreation, history and current events, and science and philosophy.Psycho-Educational ModulesFacilitate psycho-educational modules to be offered as part of each resident's treatment program. The current module is titled Debt and Budgeting (Regular Track and Special Needs) and focuses on budgeting, saving money, using credit wisely, and financial goal setting. Prepare and present treatment support and workshop data as it pertains to the American Disability Act and High Acuity population.Technical ComponentCreate and convert digital files to various formats, recording and editing software and troubleshooting computer issues. Work with Clinical Department to develop and present in-person and video recorded seminars as well as facility wide learning modules for new staff trainings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education RequiredMaster's degree from an accredited college or university in Education, Education Administration or related field.Experience RequiredExperience working with a diverse population of students and employees.Experience supervising the delivery of educational programs and services, working collaboratively within a team environment.Demonstrated understanding of maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality in a highly restrictive environment.Experience teaching basic skills to students with a wide variety of abilities, including developmentally disabled adults.Demonstrated ability to update and develop curricula.Strong communications skills, including: o Communicates clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing with individuals and groups.o Ability to work effectively with volunteers, students, residents, patients, treatment providers and other groups in which there is no employment relationship.Demonstrated ability to meet the various learning styles and needs of individuals or groups.Commitment to meeting the needs of students from marginalized and minoritized backgrounds.Demonstrated ability to comply with all applicable policies, rules, procedures, and regulations.Special Requirements and Conditions of EmploymentMust pass the Special Commitment Center's new employee orientation.Must pass in-depth Washington State Patrol and FBI background checks.Required CompetenciesIndependently analyze complex problems and judge best solution or action to resolve or respond to difficult situations.Effectively communicate with individuals with mental illnesses and/or intellectual disabilities.Coordinate with others inside or outside the organization to share information, make decisions, arrange for services or other assistance, and/or implement solutions to problems or complaints.Listen attentively, identify issues, provide options, fulfill services, and/or exercise knowledge of laws and regulations to assist others and/or resolve complaints or conflicts.Explain and enforce laws, regulations, and consequences of non-compliance. The primary work location will be at the Special Commitment Center on McNeil Island. A ferry ride to and from McNeil Island is required to get to the work site. Travel to Pierce College campuses or other sites may occur. Standard work hours are between 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with occasional evening and weekend hours required.Salary & BenefitsThe salary range for this position is $76,675 annually.
