The Drug and Alcohol Counselor is a qualified professionals who specialize in helping clients overcome alcohol, substance abuse, and behavioral addictions. Their duties include evaluating clients, developing a treatment plan to treat clients mental and physical wellbeing and assist in developing healthy coping skills to maintain long-term recovery.

The Drug and Alcohol Counselor employed by PA Health Management must demonstrate empathy and compassion to help provide direction and support for our clients. In this role, you will be responsible for developing treatment and recovery plans and identifying behaviors that impede rehabilitation. You may also be required to facilitate individual and group therapy sessions. The job roles and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Complete a minimum of 20 -25 hours in sessions weekly.
  • Completing evaluations within required timeframe.

· Managing all aspects of a case from date of entry to date of discharge.

· Developing appropriate level of care, treatment, and recovery plans utilizing the National Practice guidelines developed by ASAM (American Society of Addiction Medicine).

· Facilitating individual sessions while monitoring clients over time to access treatment progress.

· Maintaining client files up to date with funding notes, case notes, progress notes and ensuring proper documentation to remain in compliance with DDAP (Department of Drug and Alcohol Programs), Program Policies, and Company Policies.

· Collaborating and maintaining regular contact as deemed necessary with psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, social workers, and departments of correction.

· Identifying behaviors that interfere with treatment and recovery.

· Assisting intake as needed by answering incoming calls, completing intake, collecting copayments, and verifying insurance information.

· Be flexible with work schedule while contributing to the team in order to successfully complete program goals.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability requires:

A Master’s Degree or above from an accredited college with a major in medicine, chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with a clinical specialty in administration or the human services) or other related field and 2 years of clinical experience in a health or human service agency which includes 1 year of working directly with the chemically dependent.

or, A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college with a major in chemical dependency, psychology, social work, counseling, nursing (with a clinical specialty in administration or the human services) or other related field and 3 years of clinical experience in a health or human service agency which includes 1 year of working directly with the chemically dependent person.

· As a counselor you will be expected to complete 40 hours of training hours your first year of employment and 30 hours of training thereafter as requirements in § 704.11 (b)(f) and (g) (relating to staff development program). This will include 6 hours of HIV/AIDS and at least 4 hours of tuberculosis, sexually transmitted diseases, and other health related topics to be completed within the first year of employment.

· Continuing education through DDAP trainings-training plan developed with direct supervisor.

· Prior experience in the Substance Abuse field is a plus.

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Excel'
