As the Driver Trainer, you will have the opportunity to train the next generation of car haulers out of our training facility in Romulus. The Driver Trainer trains professional truck drivers to be professional car haulers. This position is responsible for educating employee drivers in the proper means of planning, loading, and unloading car haul equipment with an emphasis on safety and claims prevention. This position requires a self-motivated professional with the ability to think quickly on his/her feet, exercise independent judgment, and possess the ability to work with new car hauler in a learning environment in a professional and courteous manner daily. A successful Driver Trainer will have a unique ability to interact with professional drivers and possess the ability to help them understand how to effectively use car haul equipment and motivate them to do so productively and safely.

Job Duties

  • Effectively communicate loading, securing, and unit placement procedures to the driver trainees
  • Demonstrate proper procedures to ensure the trainees know how the tasks should be accomplished safely and effectively
  • Observe and document how trainees perform and supply them with both positive and constructive feedback in a loading yard setting
  • Supply feedback to the Training Manager on how each trainee has performed including specific examples of the trainees’ actions
  • Follow and enforce all safety rules and procedures as specified by the Department of Transportation and United Road
  • Cooperate with other Trainers to ensure all trainees have access to equipment and vehicles for loading
  • Ensure training vehicles are properly maintained and in sound running condition
  • Respond quickly and correctly to emergencies involving trainees or their equipment to prevent personal injury or vehicle damage
  • Closely supervise trainees while they load and secure vehicles, lower the loaded truck to legal height, and then safely unload the vehicles
  • Advocate and maintain a strong commitment to safety
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Able to work outdoors during all weather conditions
  • Physically able to be on his/her feet for most of an 8-hour training day, to include: walking around the trucks, climbing on the trucks to inspect securement devices, observing multiple trainees on trucks throughout the training yard
  • Knowledge of how different styles of car haulers are loaded and the flexibility to adapt their knowledge to unfamiliar or new truck styles
  • Car hauling experience is required
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and current medical card to permit conducting road tests is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of FMCSA and DOT regulations
  • ELD experience is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Great attention to detail and ability to follow processes
  • Needs strong organizational skills
