Purpose:
This position is responsible for providing business focused legal advice, counselling and leadership on development matters for the US Global Drug Development function of the Novartis Global Drug Development (GDD) Organization. This position also supports the Novartis Clinical Procurement Function in its clinical sourcing activities. The position will provide legal support to the US GDD Organization as center of excellence on all legal questions relating to drug development. This includes issues relating to Technical Research and Development, Medical Affairs, Medical Programs, and regulatory questions. The incumbent will: (i) act as a Legal Business Partner/advisor for the US GDD organization to provide strategic direction and leadership for all related legal matters, advising on general issues and guiding the GDD Organization in the US.
Major Accountabilities:
- Contracts: Provide legal counsel and risk management on US contracts related to drug development, including but not limited to, vendor agreements, digital activities and research collaborations.
- Functional Leadership: Actively contribute to GDD Legal through participating in initiatives to build departmental knowledge and capabilities by sharing best practices. Partners with colleagues to contribute expertise as needed.
- Business partner to GDO in the day-to-day operations of GDO’s activities.
- Interface with GDO clinical contract managers in International Region to develop playbooks and provide training and to resolve escalated legal/contractual questions.
- Support legal positioning on communications by GDO.
- Liaise with CONEXTS, Novartis IMI country lawyers, CRO lawyers and other external legal resources, in order to provide optimal legal support for GDD activities globally in all countries without dedicated local GDD Legal resources (International Region).
- Provide thought leadership in clinical contracting for International Region, balancing legal/financial risk with speed and efficiency of study commencement/completion (in close collaboration with the Head of Legal GDO & GDD US).
- Support Medical Programs and Patient Safety in the US in collaboration with Head Legal CMO&PS.
- Active participation as a member of the GDD Legal Team

Minimum requirements
Education:
Juris Doctor or equivalent degree, prior Bachelor’s or equivalent 4-year university degree
Bar admission
Fluency in English essential; knowledge of Spanish and/or French will be a plus, but not required.
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience in a legal counseling role in pharma/biotech industry or law firm.
- Strong knowledge of legal issues affecting the pharma/biotech industry including regulatory, medical/clinical development, privacy, and digital/social media.
- Strong business acumen with deep understanding of the pharmaceutical business and related legal issues
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills
- Strong negotiation and conflict management skills
- Good project management skills
- Strong analytical and organizational skills
- Ability to manage and influence across a cross-functional matrix organization
- Ability to manage high volume of work in fast paced environment

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $192,000 and $288,000/ year; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
