QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

A Dietary Worker must possess the ability to read, write, speak and follow written and oral instructions in English. High school education or GED is preferred, but not required. All Applicants must be at least 16 years old. The Dietary Worker must have an understanding of mechanical devices and basic sanitation procedures.

Work Experience:

Previous similar work experience is preferred, but not required. On the job training will be provided.

Required Knowledge and Abilities:

Must be have the ability or learn to use and handle chemicals according to established safety measures and work practices. The position requires decision making skills necessary to budget time and to see that all daily tasks are performed. Candidates must have the ability to maintain assigned areas in clean, safe, and orderly condition, which involves initiative and independent judgment and the ability to cope with interruptions in routine. The expected communication with geriatric population is patient and tactful.

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY

A Dietary Worker is responsible for assistance in preparing and serving meals throughout the facility. The Dietary Worker will be responsible for performing various duties in around the kitchen, including preparation of various portions of meals, presentation of food and delivery of food. The Dietary Worker is responsible for the sanitary condition of the tableware and working area, and discarding broken and chipped tableware. Dietary Workers will also be responsible for delivering and collecting food in and around residents’ rooms.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Dietary Worker is responsible for a number of duties as listed below. All of the following duties are essential unless otherwise noted:

  • Completes simple food preparation tasks.
  • Cooperates in keeping the entire kitchen clean and in order at all times.
  • Keeps own work area straightened and clean to aid in efficiency of work performed.
  • Reports equipment repairs needed to the food service supervisor.
  • Prevents food waste.
  • Pours juices and beverages (coffee, tea, milk, cocoa, etc.) and serves at correct temperature, neatly and in amounts called for at the proper time.
  • Fills orders for between-meal nourishment.
  • Places desserts on serving dishes and serves them at the proper time, attractively, and at correct temperature.
  • Helps set up tables for meal service.
  • Assists with tray service to residents in the dining area and picks up dishes after meal is served.
  • Assemble, washes and/or stacks off dishes and stores clean dishes in the proper place.
  • Assist with general cleaning and food preparation tasks as needed.
  • Maintains daily care of dishwasher and dishwashing area, lavatory and sink, salad work table, dish storage cabinet, and food carts.
  • Cleans trash cans.
  • Assists with care of floors in kitchen by sweeping and/or mopping at a time when food is not being prepared or served.
  • Assists in maintaining dry storage areas, handling, unpacking, dating and rotating of food and non-food supplies.
  • Delivers soiled linens to laundry.
  • Advises Food Service Supervisor of any needed changes to the diet cards in a timely manner.
  • Has ability to reasonably conform to all rules and policies of the facility.
  • Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS

Lift Requirements: Dietary Workers are frequently called upon to lift objects up to 20 pounds while preparing food in the kitchen. Occasionally Dietary Workers will be called upon to lift objects between 20 and 35 pounds while performing duties in and around the kitchen. The Dietary Worker will infrequently be called upon to lift in excess of 35 pounds. Dietary Workers are not required to be able to lift in excess of 50 pounds.

Carry Requirements: Dietary Workers will frequently be required to carry various food items up to 10 pounds. Dietary Workers will infrequently be required to carry food or other items between 10 and 50 pounds. Carrying in excess of 50 pounds is not required.

Sight Requirements: Dietary workers are required to have vision corrected to average to assess work and projects.

Hearing Requirements: Dietary Workers are responsible for having an average range of hearing, as corrected in order to assess and respond to resident needs or the ability to read lips and respond with commonly recognized signals.

Socialization Requirements: The Dietary Worker is required to be able to work with people in the kitchen area and have basic socialization and communication skills in dealing with residents.

Other Physical Requirements: Dietary Workers will frequently be called upon to perform duties involving twisting, bending, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and crouching. The Dietary Worker must be able to be mobile in all kitchen areas, carry trays, and do transport to resident areas.

Environment:

  • Exposure to general residential care environment.
  • Exposure to moderate temperature variations including heat generated by machinery.
  • Substantive exposure to chemicals, including cleaning solutions, perfumes, dyes, etc.
  • Extended hours may be required.
  • Moderate exposure to machinery or equipment including electric stovetop, grill and oven, commercial and home-sized mixer, coffee maker, dishwasher, garbage disposal, electric meat slicer, toaster, steam table, electric knife, ice cream machine, barbeque grill, blender, and electric roaster.
  • Moderate noise levels exist.
  • Frequent work interruptions occur.
  • Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.
