Job description

The Service Worker services and prepares revenue vehicles for the next day’s service. These duties include but are not limited to exterior and interior cleaning, fueling, adding oil and coolant, coordinating with Assistant Director, Transportation Coordinator, Mechanic and Dispatchers, and completing associated paperwork. May also check other company vehicles (vans, trucks, cars). Keeps Geauga Transit facilities properly cleaned and maintained. To perform essential tasks listed below, the worker will climb in and out of the vehicle (steps and/or ramps) up to ten times per vehicle, servicing up to 20 vehicles per shift.

  • Operates a variety of public transit vehicles to prepare and position the units for next-day service.
  • Performs a variety of tasks to clean the interior of transit vehicles, including cleaning seats, windows and handrails, vacuuming, sweeping, scrubbing and mopping floors, removing graffiti, cleaning and disinfecting bio-spills and other special cleaning needs.
  • Sets up and operates automatic bus wash. Partially washes vehicles by hand.
  • May refuel vehicles, check and add fluids including oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, etc.
  • Makes daily inspection of vehicles to note and address special cleaning needs. May also note damage to the interior or exterior or defective equipment. Writes up defect order for repair of defective equipment and coordinates with Mechanic.
  • Works as a team member with other service section personnel, including Dispatch and Mechanic.
  • Performs a variety of tasks to maintain the cleanliness of the interior of Geauga Transit facility, including, but not limited to, floors, restrooms, windows, furniture/equipment.
  • Perform minor facility maintenance services.
  • Performs a variety of duties to maintain the interior and exterior of grounds, including, but not limited to, snow removal, landscaping, and painting.
  • Performs monthly inspections of alarm system and fire extinguishers.
  • Performs facility inspections according to facility maintenance procedures.
  • Report needed equipment repair or building security to administration.
  • Follows safety policies, procedures and guidelines. Maintains a safe, clean and orderly work area.
  • Responsible for the proper labeling of all containers and chemical products used.
  • Prompt, regular, reliable attendance is required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Required Minimum Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of janitorial or custodial maintenance experience required.
  • Use of PPE to work safely around power tools, cleaning fluids, paints.
  • Methods, materials and tools related to the cleaning and servicing (oil, coolant and windshield wash fluid checks) of vehicles.
  • Procedures for safely fueling vehicles.

Special Requirements

  • All offers of employment are contingent upon passing a DOT physical exam. Participation in Laketran’s random drug and alcohol testing is a condition of hire and a requirement of employment. This position is classified as safety sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout the course of employment.
  • Must pass DOT physical upon hire and throughout course of employment.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license at hire and throughout the entire course of employment.
  • Minimum of 21 years of age with 5 years driving experience.
  • Pass (test negative) pre-employment drug and alcohol tests.
  • Pass criminal background check and remain qualified.
  • Possess the ability to see (which may be corrected) and read small print.
  • Possess the ability to hear (which may be corrected) on the phone, in person and on all communication equipment.
  • Work flexible schedule based on needs of agency. Agency is operational Monday through Friday from 5:45 a.m. until 9:15 p.m.
  • Work schedule is considered a variable 2nd shift.
  • Complete and maintain first aid and CPR certifications.
  • Require mobility to walk, stand, stoop, reach and bend.
  • Requires regular and sustained performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing, balancing, prolonged standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials which may approximate 60 pounds and may occasionally weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • Possess the ability to be discreet with confidential information.
  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
