Purpose of the Position:
The Office of Development in the Division of University Advancement at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) seeks a Development Writer/Editor to produce and perfect written content, in both print and electronic formats, that effectively communicates all fund-raising facets to a vast range of specific audiences. This position is essential in supporting the communications of the Office of Development team and the University community at-large, by assisting in fund-raising and marketing efforts. The department is seeking an experienced, creative, and compelling storyteller with a passion for producing high-quality, donor-facing proposals, solicitations, and stewardship materials.
As a critically important member of the fundraising team, the Development Writer will partner
closely with key members to collect, distill, and accurately interpret programs and initiatives and effectively express information in the form of compelling and visionary fundraising collateral to support UAH’s front-line fundraisers, often on short deadlines. Additionally, the Development Writer will author important donor stewardship materials such as acknowledgment letters, programmatic and giving-society updates, web updates, reports, brochures, and Development collateral.
Duties / Responsibilities

Duties / Responsibilities
- Development Writer – Independently and/or in collaboration with Vice President for University Advancement (VPUA) and Development staff develop, research, write, and edit original content that effectively communicates the University’s fund-raising endeavors. Tailor-created content to serve a range of specific audiences and publication platforms including, but not limited to, direct mail and email solicitations, press releases, marketing collateral, gift proposals, thank-you letters, donor impact reports, VP messaging, faculty and alumni profiles, social media postings, administrative announcements, and scripts for video and relevant University Advancement events while maintaining consistency with University brand standards.
- Copy Editor – Independently and/or in collaboration with VPUA and Development staff copyedit and proofread VPUA and Development communication materials, providing constructive, clear, and respectful feedback to improve individual pieces and overall writing; this includes reviewing copy for errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and content, ensuring that in-house style and brand guidelines are followed. Support the VPUA and Development team in proofreading, copyediting, and fact-checking projects. Check revised proofs to ensure that all corrections/changes have been made. Oversee and coordinate the creation, production, and printing of Development materials. Keep organized files on acknowledgments and other writing projects, including weekly tracking reports.
- Marketing – Assist the VPUA in identifying key areas in which to promote the University’s Development efforts on a daily basis; this may involve both independently and cooperatively prioritizing a high volume of work with multiple pressing deadlines. Collaborate with academic, research, and administrative leaders across the University to support their Development communications goals. Perform other Development writing duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Marketing, Journalism, or a related field.
- 3 years of full-time verifiable professional work experience in writing and/or copy editing.
- Must have the ability to synthesize ideas and information into clear, accurate, and persuasive prose.
- Must be able to change voice and writing styles for various authors and audiences, and adapt content for different purposes and communications channels.
- Experience writing under deadlines is required.
- Must possess strong Microsoft Office Suite skills.
- Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and diplomatic acumen.
- Must be highly organized and intrinsically motivated.
- Must be able to prioritize multiple projects and deadlines with exceptional attention to detail as well as flawless copy editing and proofing skills.

Desired Qualifications:
- Previous University Development writing, University marketing, or general fundraising writing.
- Experience in the non-profit sector is preferred.
- Experience with a fund-raising database is desired.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of University Development is preferred.
