SUMMARY: The dental assistant is responsible for working with the doctor to ensure patient comfort, care, and safety during dental procedures. In addition to patient care, the dental assistant will: (i) maintain and sterilize equipment and operatories; (ii) type doctor notes; (iii) participate in the organized and efficient operation of the practice.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma.
- Ohio driver’s license.
- Dental assistant certificate (Certified Dental Assistant preferred).
- X-ray certification.
- CPR certification.
- Phlebotomy certification (preferred but not required).
- Radiology license (preferred but not required).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION: Patient Management:
- Greets patients when they arrive and monitors patient arrival time; escorts patients to and from treatment rooms when scheduled; shows care and concern and helps patients feel comfortable; ensures patients are always attended to.
- Obtains and reviews health histories according to office protocols and procedures; prepares treatment rooms for procedures to be performed.
- Performs clinical procedures as directed by the dentist; anticipates and assists dentist’s needs; mixes dental materials; keeps dentist informed to ensure that work in the treatment room runs smoothly and efficiently; performs functions and other tasks as assigned by the dentist.
- Charts date of service, services rendered to the patient, and any charges for such services; ensure proper treatment notes are recorded in the patient’s chart.
- Ensures patients’ questions are answered thoroughly before they leave; notifies appropriate staff member if patient should be called in the evening after a difficult appointment.
- Keeps dental units ready, stocked and clean; keeps trays, instruments, and treatment room drawers organized; oversees cleanliness of treatment room according to sterilization procedures; implements the preventative maintenance and cleaning schedule for dental equipment.
- Disinfects treatment rooms according to OSHA regulations; sterilizes all instruments and hand pieces according to OSHA regulations and ensures that the office sterilization procedures document is on display.
- Promptly sends out and monitors all dental laboratory cases.
- Maintains dental office emergency kits and nitrous and oxygen tanks; follows laboratory procedures according to office protocol.
- Securely stores and handles patient records in compliance with office policies and procedures, and applicable legal requirements, including the HIPAA privacy and security regulations.
- Accurately records patients’ medical and dental histories, files patient information, and arranges patient charts and radiographs for the next day’s appointments.
- Tracks referrals to and from other doctors; assists in administration of the recall system.
- Helps in other areas of the office when necessary (i.e., answering phones, unpacking supplies, completing insurance forms, moving former patient records, etc.)
- Participates actively in team meetings; promotes team concept by interacting when others in the office.
- Knowledge of good oral hygiene.
