Summary:
This mid-level dental assistant position performs under the direct supervision of the dentist. This position will assist with dental procedures, perform some clerical tasks, and perform other duties such as insurance verification and referral submissions as needed. The employee must already be an established Expanded Functions Dental Assistant with multiple years of experience and cross-training.
Essential Functions:
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic dental assistant duties
- Assist dentists with all clinical and clerical procedures
- Demonstrate knowledge of all aspects of chair side assisting and front desk procedures
- Assist in chair side operations, until competencies are satisfied
- Acknowledge and / or assist anyone in contact with the department in a pleasant, helpful manner
- Prepare patients for dental exam, including taking dental and medical history and charting
- Accurately take digital x-rays
- Prepare patients for operatory procedures
- Discharge and review post operative instructions with patients
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and cleaning of instruments and equipment, including central vacuum/air/water units, cabinets and operatories.
- Maintain instrumentation for dental hygiene treatment by cleaning, sterilizing, and selecting instruments.
- Perform all sterilization and autoclave procedures
- Ensure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and calling for repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Lubricate handpieces on a routine basis.
- Assist with inventory and supply ordering
- Maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies, placing, and expediting orders for supplies, and verifying receipt of supplies.
- Understand all HIPAA and OSHA requirements and infection control procedures
- Demonstrate knowledge and practice of instrument cleaning and sterilization procedures
- Perform all sterilization and autoclave procedures
- Accurately perform monthly autoclave monitoring, records data on log sheets, and maintains MSDS book
- Prepare instrument trays and operatories for procedures
- Assists dentist at chair side by preparing operatories for procedures:
- Seat patient; prepare various tray set-ups.
- Mix dental materials.
- Cleans work areas.
- Loads anesthesia carpules for injections.
- Take necessary dental radiographs.
- Perform routine laboratory procedures.
- Utilize cold sterile and autoclave methods for instruments.
- Adhere to local and state regulations regarding disposal of blood borne pathogen materials.
- Supply dentist instruments and materials needed to perform procedures.
- Charts information from oral examination on forms in the patient's dental record.
- Provides information to the patient such as pre-op and post-op instructions.
- Under delegated order of the dentist, performs all expanded functions as allowed by law and completion of accreditation training.
- Take impressions for study casts.
- Place periodontal dressings.
- Removing periodontal or surgical dressings.
- Remove sutures.
- Polish amalgam restorations.
- Polish clinical crowns of the teeth for the purpose of removing stains.
- Apply topical fluorides and anesthetics.
- Apply sealants for the prevention of decay.
- Retrieve records and complete electronic documentation requirements
- Develop knowledge of electronic dental record and other organization-specific programs.
- Knowledge of dental terminology
- Submit and track referrals to insurance portals and outside specialties.
- Perform front-office duties when needed.
Minimum Qualifications: (Experience/Skills/Abilities/Education/Certifications):
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Expanded Functions Dental Assistant Certification and Radiology Certification
- CPR Certification prior to or shortly after position is attained
- In-depth knowledge of Health/Safety regulations applicable to these professions (i.e., OSHA and HIPAA requirements.).
- Able to communicate with all patients, staff, and others clearly and effectively with a friendly and reassuring demeanor.
- Able to use a computer proficiently
- Able to understand and use Electronic Dental Records
- Understanding of Microsoft Office (including, but not limited to Office 365, Outlook Email, Excel, Word and PowerPoint).
- Experience in preparing and maintaining dental equipment

- Bilingual communication preferred.
