Job Description:
The Dean of Boys, under the supervision of the Principal, and in collaboration with the Dean of Girls, provides leadership and guidance in developing a positive and joyful Catholic culture, especially among our Boys in Grades 5-8, while also providing some occasional support with younger students. The Dean has an authentic desire for young men’s formation as a whole person and is dedicated to student success and excellence and their growth in virtue. The Dean builds positive relationships with students, parents and teachers, and implements all discipline, attendance, and safety policies in accord with the mission of Spiritus Sanctus Academy.
This position requires the candidate to take on some teaching responsibilities as well. Middle School English, History, PE, Latin and Logic are all possibilities. As a teacher, the candidate must be able to provide a positive learning environment, organize the classroom to facilitate student learning, supervise the safety and welfare of students, and help nurture a positive Catholic culture, through his or her own example and by cooperating in the formation of each child as a joyful disciple of Christ.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Dean of Boys
  • Supporting the Catholic educational mission of the school
  • Promoting Gospel values and upholding the teachings of the Catholic Church
  • Providing an example, by one’s life, of a joyful and whole-hearted living of the Gospel
  • Supporting our young men in a life of Christian discipleship and virtue
  • Developing, implementing and supporting a positive school climate, in the spirit of the Preventative Method of St. John Bosco
  • Affirming parents/guardians in their role as the primary educators of their children
  • Supervising and maintaining discipline (with a special responsibility for the boys) in Grades 5-8
  • Directing and supporting faculty in supervision of student behavior and discipline procedures
  • With the Principal and Dean of Girls, coordinating faculty schedules for supervision of students
  • Is visible and present in classrooms, on the campus and at school activities
  • Monitoring or ensuring supervision of detentions
  • Communicating with parents, teachers, and students regarding students’ opportunities to grow in Christian discipleship, as well as matters of disruptive behavior, and disciplinary issues
  • Ensuring student safety
  • Additional tasks deemed necessary and/or assigned by the principal
Middle School Teacher
In addition to the responsibilities above, the teacher’s principle duties and responsibilities include:
  • Using virtue-based methods to foster discipleship and a classroom environment conducive to growth and learning
  • Preparing and delivering sound instruction to advance students towards content mastery
  • Effectively assessing student learning and performance
  • Possessing and teaching organizational habits to foster an environment of learning and growth
  • Collaborating with school administration, faculty, staff and parents to maximize students’ intellectual, social and physical formation
  • Attending faculty meetings, professional development training, and other school events as required
Qualifications
  • Faithful, practicing Catholic who is passionate about creating and supporting a Catholic culture in the classroom and throughout the school
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s Degree, possess MI teaching certification, or be willing to pursue it
  • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and have the ability to develop positive relationships with students, parents and teachers
  • Experience working with young people is required Must show attention to detail
  • Must demonstrate excellent organizational, time management, and problem solving skills
  • Must exercise good judgment in working with young people
  • If teaching English, must possess an openness to or demonstrate ability in facilitating Socratic conversations about literature
  • Must demonstrate personal self-discipline, show initiative, and be adaptable and flexible in both routine and unexpected situations
  • VIRTUS safe environment training and a background check
  • A mastery of content and a joy in teaching!
The ideal candidate will model the Catholic faith, while promoting and enhancing the educational experience for students through the integration of academic, athletic, and personal/social support.
Salary is commensurate with education and experience.
