Primary Purpose:
The Cultural Orientation and Wellness Educator provides critical psychoeducation on wellness and cultural orientation to support newly arrived Afghans engaged in the Preferred Communities Afghan Supplemental (PCAS) program. The Cultural Orientation and Wellness Educator provides educational programming which advances self-sufficiency, by using a strengths-based, community centered approach that facilitates the navigation of complex systems and empowers clients in their integration process. Under the guidance of the Site Director, the qualified candidate will use cultural orientation, as well as mental health and wellness curriculum to support the wellness of new arrival clients. This will happen through targeted outreach and partnerships with new arrival communities. This position reports to Regional Community Engagement Manager.

Essential Duties:
  • Coordinate wellness support groups for PCAS clients
  • Provide cultural orientation classes for new arrival communities using curriculum and community partnerships to support adult learning
  • Use assessment tools to assess client needs
  • Facilitate psychoeducation support groups on wellness topics using pre-established curriculum
  • Ability to navigate crisis and conflict within and outside of group setting
  • Demonstrates ability to develop rapport and form a respectful relationship with clients focused on helping them gain needed skills while using a strengths-based perspective
  • Demonstrates sensitivity and appropriate responsiveness to cultural differences of agency clients, practicing cultural humility
  • Conducting wellness groups in a manner that all individuals are respected and heard
  • Keeps casework staff informed of client care, problems and issues
  • Collaborates with the legal and casework team to meet the ongoing psycho-educational needs required
  • Uses a trauma-responsive lens to engage and respond to the needs of clients
  • Plans and implements logistics for cultural orientation classes, including coordination of classroom space, scheduling class times, securing interpretation support, booking guest speakers and notifying clients of upcoming classes
  • Maintain all documentation necessary for program as required internally, by funding source, or referral sources.
  • Make appropriate internal and external referrals for clients based on their needs and goals
  • Leads cultural orientation and wellness support groups, adjusting format to reflect client needs (in-person, virtual, over the phone)
  • Conducts assessments on all clients attending cultural orientation and wellness groups to ensure necessary information is communicated clearly, learned and implemented, making adjustments to curriculum as deemed necessary
  • Tailors and conducts cultural orientation sessions in-home to accommodate clients with health issues
  • Solicit feedback from CWS partners, community members and clients to continually contribute to overall quality improvement and support program implementation
  • Develop and implement monitoring and evaluation practices for cultural orientation and wellness initiatives
  • Disseminate information regarding PCAS cultural orientation and wellness activities locally
  • Ensure communication with community partners
  • Liaise with community partners and track program activities, completing funder required reports as applicable
  • Contribute to the innovation and improvement of the CWS Houston Office

Qualifications:

Experience:
  • Strong experience in non-profit, social justice, education is preferred
  • Ability to act as a cultural broker, supporting individuals in navigating systems
  • Ability to engage in trauma-responsive practices to support the wellness of clients
  • Ability to facilitate adult education with cultural humility
  • Experience working in Texas with knowledge of the sociopolitical infrastructure, key partner agencies for CWS, i.e. churches, relevant government departments, like-minded NGOs, etc.
  • Ability to interact comfortably with partner organizations and other community stakeholders in gathering and coordinating people and resources.
  • Experience working and maneuvering in a multicultural and diverse environment with tact and poise to reach agency objectives in the community

Skills:
  • English skills, both written and verbal are required. Fluency in multiple languages preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently without close supervision Superior public speaking skills and strength in written communication.
  • Computer literate, with proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word) and internet applications, particularly social media platforms.
  • Strong communication skills to successfully represent CWS and interact with various audiences and levels of partners, i.e., community partners, local government representatives, faith-based leaders and representatives.
  • Adaptability and flexibility to changes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to relate to various audiences and personalities.
  • Time management, planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree in education, communication, humanities or social sciences or associate degree with 2+ years of relevant experience in community outreach.

Special Requirements:
  • Proof of COVID vaccination is required as a condition for employment
  • The successful candidate must have a car, a valid driver’s license, and an insurable driving record
  • This is a hybrid position, involving in-person and remote work
  • Works varied hours, including possible night and weekend work
