OVERVIEW

Are you a hands-on leader who enjoys working outdoors? The Larimer County Conservation Corps (LCCC) is hiring a variety of temporary Crew Leaders to encourage, supervise and work alongside crews (made up of 6-8 corpsmembers ages 16-25) performing vital maintenance and conservation work in our treasured forests and parks in Larimer County!

LCCC empowers corpsmembers to develop personal and professional skills, gain environmental awareness and actively engage in the community, while developing self-sufficiency to help them become productive members of our community. The LCCC is based in Fort Collins, Colorado and is an accredited corps through the Colorado Youth Corps Association and The Corps Network. CREW LEADER TYPES AND ASSIGNMENTS
_All Crew Leaders are expected to work 7:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday - Thursday and attend a staff meeting on Friday mornings. Holiday weeks will be modified to serve Tuesday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Where camping is specified below, Crew Leaders must camp with the crew Monday - Thursday. Meals will be provided while camping. Schedules may be modified due to training, weather, logistics, or other unforeseen circumstances._

Trails Crew Leader (2 assignments)
Leads a crew of 6-8 corpsmembers, ages 18-25, to perform various maintenance and rock work on National Forest or National Park trails while working alongside US Forest Service or National Park staff. Crews will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds throughout the summer. We are hiring two trail crew leaders, one for each of the following assignments:

  • US Forest Service (Arapahoe and Roosevelt National Forest): May 22 - September 29, 2023 (tentative).
  • Rocky Mountain National Park: May 22 - August 18, 2023 (tentative).

Land Crew Leader (1 assignment)
Leads a crew of 6-8 corpsmembers, ages 16-18, to perform various conservation (invasive species removal and habitat restoration) and trail maintenance projects throughout Larimer County. Project sites include: Lory State Park, Bellevue-Watson Fish Hatchery and Horsetooth Mountain Park. We are hiring one land crew leader for an assignment from May 22 - August 11, 2023 (tentative).

Forestry Crew Leader (3 assignments)
Leads a crew of 6-8 corpsmembers, ages 18-25, to perform various tree removal, fire mitigation, invasive species management, habitat restoration, fence construction, trail work, and water quality preservation work. We are hiring three crew leaders, one for each of the following assignments:

  • Button Rock: Located at Button Rock Preserve in Lyons. Crew will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site. Assignment dates: May 22 - October 13, 2023 (tentative).
  • Big Thompson: This crew will work along the Big Thompson River. Camping accommodations are still being coordinated, but crew may camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site. Assignment dates: May 22 - October 13, 2023 (tentative).
  • Red Feather Lakes: This crew will work near Red Feather Lakes. Crew will camp at various designated and dispersed campgrounds near the work site. Assignment dates: May 22 - August 11, 2023 (tentative).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Specifically, this position:

  • Motivates and encourages corpsmembers to work and persevere in difficult and physically challenging work settings.
  • Promotes leadership while encouraging the development of teamwork, self worth, conflict resolution, effective communication, goal setting, decision making, and the building of a sense of community.
  • Manages and monitors the physical and emotional safety of the crew.
  • Trains corpsmembers in areas including, but not limited to, proper tool use, sawyer certification, and Leave No Trace principles.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and enforce the use of appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Completes timesheets, evaluations, incident reports, and other paperwork requirements.
  • Facilitates team building activities, environmental education, and job/life skills curriculum on a regular basis, or as projects determine appropriate.
  • Supervises a crew of six to eight AmeriCorps corpsmembers, ages 16 to 25, daily (Land Crew- ages 16-18; Trails and Forestry Crew- ages 18-25).
  • Performs duties expected of any corpsmember including conservation work, meal preparation, camp clean up, and other day-to-day duties.

We are looking for a candidate that will:

  • Exhibit excellent leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Use clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Have experience working in a team environment and providing supervision to a diverse group (preferably youth).
  • Demonstrate proficient troubleshooting and conflict management skills.
  • Preferably have previous conservation corps experience.
  • Complete work projects in a variety of weather conditions and terrain, including high altitudes.
  • Demonstrate the safe operation and maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Safely drive a twelve-passenger van and trailer.
  • Have a bachelor's degree in natural resources, forestry, or an education-related field (preferred but not required).
  • Will proficiently use technology to accurately complete digital daily and weekly logs.
  • Implement Larimer County Conservation Corps policies and procedures.
  • Coordinate logistics with project sponsors, program coordinator, and corps manager.
  • For Forestry Crew Leads: Complete Basic Wildland Firefighter training, S-130/190

QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates will be screened for the following required minimum qualifications. Any candidate who does not meet all of the qualifications listed as required will be eliminated from the process.

  • Possession of High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver's license required. Will be required to provide DMV report upon offer of employment.
  • Four months experience providing outdoor education, leadership, or supervising conservation efforts, preferred.

Note: Current Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification must be obtained before May 22, 2023. The LCCC will host a Wilderness First Aid course for new staff as an option.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Crew Leaders perform physical labor for extended periods of time outdoors in all weather conditions, day or night, including activities and physical demands requiring strength to lift, carry, push, pull, and otherwise move objects of up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Crew leaders will hike up to eight miles carrying 50 lbs. in a 10-hour day.
