Under general supervision coordinates processing of applications, appointments, privileging staff and health professionals. Responsible for credentialing/ privileging physicians and other healthcare professionals, managing meetings, resolving issues and complaints, ensuring healthcare providers adhere to quality regulations and policies, maintaining credentials/privileges. May delegate responsibilities and/or provide notification to others as to status of the above functions. Collects and inputs call schedules, coordinates physician orientation, works with medical staff committees on agenda/minutes, and support of other medical staff functions.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

Organizes and oversees the credentialing approval process for medical staff and allied health professionals, including new staff applications and privileges, reappointments and updated privileges, primary source verification of licensure, education, training, etc. Maintains and validates this information as necessary in primary physician database.

Prepares agendas and related materials for highest level medical staff committees. Prepares and keeps permanent record of proceedings (minutes) and actions of each committee. Assures expeditious follow-through on action items and policy changes. Disseminates information accordingly. Assures overall continuity of medical staff activities.

With the department manager and other department leaders, plans, develops and implements long and short- term goals for medical staff as approved by the medical staff committee.

Deals sensitively and professionally with physicians regarding problems and queries.

Acts as liaison between the Chief of Staff, medical staff, all hospital medical, nursing and administrative departments, and related health care agencies by answering questions, exchanging and gathering information and resolving operational problems.

Reviews and responds to requests, making determinations on appropriate demographic data to share with other hospitals and organizations for verifications, peer reviews, etc. Participates in audits by providing reports and statistics for surveyors, regulating agencies and accrediting bodies, other hospitals as well as internally.

Coordinates annual medical staff elections.

Manages the design, development, and evaluation in collaboration with the department chairs for the initial focused and ongoing professional review of all providers with clinical privileges.

Maintains a working knowledge of the Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, manuals, policies and procedures. Assists in development and interpretation of these to medical staff and departments. Audits committee minutes for compliance.

Coordinates committee activities, including initial committee appointments, arrangements for meetings and the required follow-up necessary to ensure that objectives are accomplished. Maintains all confidential committee files.

May be responsible for maintaining the hospital’s primary physician database on credentialed and privileged practitioners, including assigning/withdrawing permissions to users, running reports, extracting data and validating system information.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate degree in business or related field.
  • Two years of medical staff/credentialing or health care setting experience.
  • Certification by the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) as a Certified Professional in Medical Services Management (CPMSM) or a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS) obtained within two years of eligibility.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, health care administration or related field.
  • Certification by the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) as a Certified Professional in Medical Services Management (CPMSM) or a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist (CPCS).
