Birth Certificate: a certified copy of your birth certificate from the county you were born. We cannot accept birth certificates issued by the hospital.
Educational Transcripts: from the institution of your highest level of education.
Military Transcripts: Military service discharge, if applicable.
Valid Driver"s License: bring your license and two photo copies of said driver's license.
A signed copy of the Authorization for Release of Personal Information form.
A signed copy of the Permission for Security Check form.

Salary Range
The starting salary for 2022 is $44,769.92 plus overtime available once released from training.
Position Summary
This is general duty correctional work of moderate difficulty in the supervision and security of inmates in the County Jail.
The Correctional Officer will be responsible for guarding the inmates of the McLean County Jail in accordance with established policies, regulations, and procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Greets the public at the jail office, visitor's reception area, and over the phone by answering inquiries in relation to a prisoner in custody; conducts prisoners to visiting area.
Checks all commitment papers in order to determine the sentencing authority, legal authority of arrest and/or legal status of the prisoner; conducts all booking procedures including mugshots, finger printing, medical sheets, and all associated paperwork.
Observes conduct and behavior of inmates to prevent disturbances and escapes
Searches a prisoner for weapons or articles that might be used to inflict injuries to himself for others and/or to deface County property or to make an escape; removes belts, ties, etc., and safely stores them.
Records and keeps essential data on all prisoners; the time and reason for a prisoner's removal from the original cell or from the jail to another facility or hospital; records the time and day of discharge of a prisoner from custody and/or transfer to another correctional institution.
Supervises the distribution of meals to prisoners; distributes and collects eating utensils and collects them after each meal; reports immediately any utensils that are missing.
Assists medical technicians and nurses while medical services are being performed on the Inmates.
Acts as recreational officer Supervising a program of recreation developed for inmates; provides educational and recreational Supplies and equipment and retrieves same.
Performs inspections on as assigned schedule; reports any unusual occurrence to the Sergeant and prepares a written report on each occurrence; operates and inspects security devices.
Initiates a routine "shake-down" of cells to look for contraband; inspects beds, wash bowls, shower stalls and toilet fixtures; examines pillows, blankets, mattresses; prepares written report as to findings.
Escorts prisoners to and from court and may appear as a witness and/or to report to court on inmate conduct.
Escorts lawyers and other authorized officials for visits with an inmate and/or escorts family members to visiting area on visiting day.
Exercises disciplinary control over inmates; hears grievances and counsels inmates; prevents or controls fighting between inmates and restrains inmates during emergencies.
Performs related work as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the standards applied to the management of a jail. Knowledge of the basic principles and procedures of prisoner confinement.
Ability to exercise authority with firmness, tact and impartiality.
Ability to understand and carry out detailed oral and written instructions.
Ability to manually prepare clear and concise reports.
Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Ability to learn complex laws which define the rights of prisoners.
Skill in the use of firearms, which can be learned on the job.
Manual ability to type, operate word processing equipment and Standard office equipment; Such as copy machines, fax machines, mailing machines, etc.
Cognitive ability to exercise independent judgement and initiative.
Cognitive ability to perform complex and varied tasks.
Eligibility Requirements
Certified employee candidates must meet the following requirements. However, one or more of the requirements may be waived at the discretion of the Commission according to the law. The Sheriff of McLean County shall appoint as certified employees only those persons who have been certified to him, in writing, by this Commission as being eligible for appointment. The requirements are as follows:
Be no younger than 20 years of age at the time his/her application is received by the Commission. However, applicants will not be considered for a permanent position until he/she has attained 21 years of age.
Be a high school graduate or have certification or equivalent formal education.
Have successfully completed all testing procedures as the Commission may prescribe from time to time.
Be acceptable to the Commission upon oral interview.
Be acceptable to the Jail Administration upon oral interview.
Pass a background investigation.
Pass a pre-employment polygraph test.
Have a valid Illinois driver"s license at the time of examination.
Submit to medical and psychological tests as the Commission may prescribe.
Be a Citizen of the United States.
Must be a person of good moral character and reputation.
No applicant shall have been previously convicted of a felony offense or crime of moral turpitude under the laws of Illinois or any other state.
Preference will be given to persons who have honorably served in the Military or Naval Service of the United States.
Reside within one (1) hour"s driving time from the certified employee"s residence to the McLean County Law and Justice Center, Bloomington, Illinois, regardless of weather and road conditions, road construction, vehicle availability, and vehicle performance.
Physical Attributes/Demands
Physical strength and agility and freedom from disabling defects; ability to meet such specific physical requirements as may be established by competent authority.
Visual ability to read and operate standard office equipment.
Visual ability to operate vehicles during day and night hours.
Visual ability free of color blindness as demonstrated by successfully passing the test known as the H-R-R Pseudo Isochromatic Plates produced by the Instrument Division of the American Optical Company.
Ability to hear and understand spoken communication with other individuals in person and using a telephone or radio.
Ability to speak clearly enough to communicate effectively with other individuals in person and using a telephone or radio.
Ability to reach into file drawers in standard five-drawer filing cabinets.
Ability to physically restrain persons in the course of law enforcement activities.
Ability to pursue individuals on foot (i.e.: run) in the course of law enforcement
activities.
Ability to lift and maneuver moderately heavy tools and equipment.
Ability to lift and/or move heavy objects and/or persons in the course of rescue activities.
Freedom from mental disorders which would interfere with performance of all duties as described.
