Job description

Finding the right place to grow your career isn't (over) easy, so we're here to help by sharing a few reasons why the grass is greener at Vital Farms. We think you'll appreciate our focus on Conscious Capitalism, which drives business decisions that benefit all our stakeholders (leading to even better business results). You might be drawn to our innovative approach and refusal to settle for the "way things have always been done." Or you could find it exciting to grow your skills while working for an industry-leading brand. Whether you're into our values, our brand, or our egg-cellent puns, we hope you'll join our Crew and help us change the world 108 square feet at a time!

As an experienced attorney, you know rules aren't made to be broken. They're meant to be followed. Closely. Carefully. And with a lawyer's attention to detail. What's more, you love a good challenge, which is why you've been looking for an opportunity like this one - to work with a publicly traded Certified B Corp and public benefit corporation that's striving to raise the standards of the food industry.

That's the kind of ethical, committed, and organized attorney we're looking for at Vital Farms because, you see, we're on a mission to change the food industry one ingredient at a time. While we're known for our eggs and butter, the truth is we've got big plans to do so much more. That's because we give a cluck when it comes to the health of our animals, the health of our consumers, and the health of our planet.

If that all sounds like something you care about too, let's talk about how you can help us as Corporate Counsel at Vital Farms.

Reporting to the Director of Legal, Commercial Transactions and Litigation, you will play an essential role as a generalist in handling a variety of employment, litigation, commercial, and corporate, matters. That means you'll be working with Vital Farms employees (our crew members) across multiple departments. Flexible, yet focused, you're comfortable wearing a variety of hats and taking initiative. You always bring insight and good humor, with your default M.O. being "let's figure it out."

What You'll Do

We're looking for a lawyer who wants to learn and grow in diverse areas of practice - someone who's humble, approachable, and ready to roll up their sleeves to be part of an amazing organization. With a solutions-oriented attitude, you're energized by dynamic, fast-paced work environments, and you're excited to tackle a variety of projects, including the following responsibilities:

  • Take a hands-on approach to all facets of disputes and litigation (including commercial and employment litigation), by responding to subpoenas and discovery requests, reviewing legal briefs, and negotiating and drafting settlements, with outside counsel assistance as needed.
  • Provide proactive employment law advice, assistance, and counsel to our People team and management on a variety of subjects, including hiring practices and procedures, crew member performance management, employee relations issues, employment-related agreements, and regulatory compliance
  • Draft, negotiate, and close a wide range of commercial agreements, using a practical and business-informed approach and advising teams throughout the business on contract matters
  • Assist in the development and presentation of education and training materials to the crew members and other business stakeholders
  • Provide support as needed on day-to-day corporate and securities law matters
  • Participate in special projects to identify and proactively manage legal risks, including in connection with mergers and acquisitions
  • Contribute to internal knowledge management initiatives, including a document database, template agreement library, presentations, and training initiatives
  • Help to develop, implement, and continually improve company and Legal team processes and procedures

What You Bring to the Table

  • First, you bring a big ol' helping of passion for ethical, nutritious food and purpose-driven brands. And you bring extra napkins
  • You're an attorney with a JD from a highly regarded, accredited law school and an active member in good standing in at least one state bar (any U.S. jurisdiction)
  • 5 or more years of experience as a practicing attorney, with employment and/or litigation experience (a mix of top law firm and in-house experience is a bonus)
  • You're flexible and adaptable, willing to address challenges touching on any of the various practice areas that may come across your desk in a given day
  • You have the ability to synthesize and present complex ideas simply and understandably to crew members at all levels and to our leadership team
  • You bring focus and direction to the most important priorities to promote the biggest impact, avoid the most risks, and provide the greatest return on investment of time and resources
  • You express empathy, collaboration, mutual respect, and a strong desire to cultivate trust and prosperity across our stakeholder groups
  • You're comfortable interacting with everyone from senior executives to interns
  • You have a consistent track record working in a fast-paced environment and balancing multiple projects simultaneously
  • You hold yourself to the highest standards and you strive to improve yourself and others each day
  • You believe "we" is greater than "me". You know the power of teamwork and celebrate the work of others before your own
  • You give a sh*t. About the animals. About relationships. About keeping things real. You believe in acting like an owner and making Vital Farms a place to be proud of
  • Honest conversations don't ruffle your feathers and you don't walk on eggshells. If you see something in the organization that can be improved, you're not afraid to speak up and you expect your colleagues to do the same

What We Bring to the Table

  • A fast-paced, energetic environment with passionate people who are leading a movement to bring ethically produced food to the table
  • Competitive pay and benefits (Medical, Dental, Vision, and Paid Parental Leave, just to name a few)
  • Company-wide bonus program; when we succeed together, we celebrate together
  • Generous retirement contributions: 401(k) + 3% Contribution from Day 1
  • Free eggs and butter, along with friends and family discounts
  • Fun team SWAG that will make you the talk of the town
  • Professional development opportunities and an amazing team dedicated to your growth
