Job Summary:
Responsible for recording meter data and maintaining water meters throughout the city; coordinates meter services personnel through the delegation and distribution of work.

Typical Duties

Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions may include the following. Must possess required knowledge skills, abilities and experience and to be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations that the essential functions of the job can be performed. Other related duties may be assigned.


  • Walks and/or drives vehicle to assigned route and reads water meters.
  • Checks meters; determines if functioning properly; completes documents indicating meter irregularities.
  • Cleans meter dials and meter boxes, reports meter tampering for water meters.
  • Connects and disconnects water services; disconnects meters for non-payment of utility service; keeps accurate records of meter reads, connects and disconnects.
  • Inspects equipment and performs preventive maintenance or repairs; refers complex equipment problems to supervisor.
  • Confers with customers regarding service problems and reports feedback to supervisor.
  • Serves as a liaison between Meter Services and Utility Billing Supervisor.

Education & Experience

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, and
  • Up to one (2) years’ experience in general construction or maintenance, or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Proficient knowledge of field maintenance and emergency repair of meters
  • Comprehensive knowledge of problem solving, conflict management and customer relations techniques.
  • Proficient skills to communicate clearly and concisely
  • Basic understanding of City safety rules and operating procedures

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid State Driver’s License
