JOBAssesses, develops, implements, administers, supervises, and evaluates a comprehensive adventure recreation program including climbing wall, teambuilding programs, equipment rental and bicycle program, trips, certifications, and experiential learning programs. Leads departmental risk management initiatives.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Designs, plans, administers, and evaluates a comprehensive challenge course, climbing wall, adventure recreation, experiential learning programs and departmental events; oversees the utilization, operation, and maintenance of the challenge course, climbing wall, and anticipated equipment rental and bicycle program, including administration and overall daily operations. Facilitates participant registration, forms, and waivers. Manages adventure recreation and teambuilding programs in accordance with the policies and procedures governing the department's operation. Assists with the development and implementation of intentional marketing and communication strategic plan for past and prospective participants. Researches and develops new programs based on industry trends; assesses program needs and effectiveness through customer interest, participation statistics, satisfaction surveys, accomplishment of learning outcomes, and participant feedback. Maintains program participation data to generate area specific reports. Purchases and maintains equipment for challenge course, climbing wall, and adventure recreation programs; develops, enforces, and evaluates facility policies and risk management procedures for challenge course and climbing wall use and emergency care for patrons. Provides and develops curriculum for teambuilding facilitator training to campus and community. Assists with the development and monitoring of program budgets. Coordinates the climbing wall and teambuilding areas’ schedules of usage and staffing for campus recreation, on-campus groups, and community groups; verifies hours of programming and staffing to generate invoices and submit billing for area specific programs. Assists in the development and implementation of revenue generating programs and services; researches and applies for potential grant funding and develops community partnerships. Assists with coordination and collaborates on anticipated summer camp programs. Maintains and develops YSU as a host site and/or provider for nationally recognized adventure recreation and safety certifications for departmental staff and campus community. Coordinates registration process and maintains accurate records. Plans and conducts safety training and leads anticipated safety committee. Keeps all personal and departmental safety certifications up to date; maintains professional association memberships. Develops and oversees equipment rental and bicycle rental program; specific duties may include rental agreements, cash handling, equipment maintenance, repair, upgrade and replacement, and inventory control. Creates and executes policy. Develops and implements experiential learning programs; collaborates with student leadership and orientation programs. Works independently, with the ability and adaptability to use sound judgment and discretion to make decisions in managing the operations of the department, including emergency situations, with efficiency and effectiveness, without direct supervision. Other Functions and Responsibilities: Performs other related duties as assigned. Equipment Operated: Computer and all other standard office equipment. Work Schedule: Typically, M-T-W-Th-F 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Evenings and weekends. Supervision Exercised: Supervision is exercised over student employees. Reports to: Director, Campus Recreation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures: American Red Cross CPR instructor and Wilderness First Responder certifications; valid driver’s license. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of: University policies and procedures*; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; department/division policies and procedures*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management; office management; project management. Skill in: interpersonal, organizational, and written communication skills. Use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*. Ability to: meet the requirements of the University's vehicle policies and procedures; collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; compile and prepare reports; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships. Minimum Qualifications: At least a bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, recreation management, sports management, kinesiology, education, exercise science, or a related field. At least two years of progressive experience in adventure recreation and teambuilding facilitation or a related field (one year of experience plus one year of graduate assistant experience can be substituted for the two-year experience requirement). Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in campus recreation administration, higher education administration, student development, outdoor recreation, recreation management, sports management, kinesiology, or a related field. American Red Cross CPR Instructor Certification, Wilderness First Responder Certification. Challenge recreation experience. Knowledge of basic student development or education theory specific to leadership, technical skills, or facilitation skills for team building activities. Demonstrated experience in Microsoft Office, Innosoft Fusion, and/or Canva applications and revenue generating experience.
