This position will be filled at either the Computing Systems Professional 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Join our world class computing organization! eXperience Information Technology (XIT) division is seeking an energetic and customer-focused UNIX/Linux System Administrator for the XIT Institutional Systems Services (XIT-ISS) group. Our diverse work group consists of approximately 65 professionals, technicians, and students. XIT division is responsible for the desktop and server support for computing environments at the Laboratory. The division is organized around field support groups that are focused on supporting unclassified and classified programmatic and mission support needs, and a technical services group that provides the enterprise level configuration management services for these computing environments.
Computing Systems Professional 2 ($81,700 - $133,100)
The successful candidate will perform the full spectrum of remote and field level Linux administration and some Windows desktop administration, including but not limited to:
- Supporting Red Hat Enterprise Linux desktop workstations on the unclassified network
- Installing, configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting servers, workstations, and network issues in a heterogeneous environment
- Implementing Linux solutions to support customer workstation requirements
- Resolving customer support issues and fulfilling requests through remote and onsite support
- Automating tasks using programming and scripting
- Troubleshooting and resolving network issues including file shares and authentication
- Excellent customer service skills and ability to mentor collegaues
Computing Systems Professional 3 ($99,200 - $164,100)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will be required, but not limited to:
- Planning, designing, documenting and implementing complex UNIX/Linux solutions to support customer requirements
- Testing emerging technologies to ensure adherence to compliance and customer requirements
- Configuring and managing storage and backup solutions
- Ability to review, understand, and document end-to-end work processes
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Demonstrated knowledge of UNIX/Linux system administration including desktop management
- Experience with system integration, image development, patching, upgrades, complex problem resolution
- Knowledge of hardware and operating systems including system architectures, network infrastructures, and client/server principles
- Knowledge of system security measures including encryption and network hardening techniques
- Experience scripting automated tasks in a UNIX/Linux supported language
Additional Job Requirements for Computing Systems Professional 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires
- Extensive experience in UNIX/Linux system administration including desktop and server management at a senior level
- Extensive experience working with authentication services such as LDAP, PKI, and other pluggable authentication modules (PAM)
- Experience with configuring and managing storage and backup solutions
- Knowledge and experience in project management
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, applicable advanced vendor and/or professional certification is desirable.
Desired Qualifications:
- Active DOE L or Q clearance, or equivalent, transferable clearance
- Experience in Windows and/or Macintosh desktop administration
- Advanced vendor certification
- Experience with Ansible
- Experience with Nagios
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
