General Duty Statement

Performs entry level technical work assisting in the implementation of community recreation programs. Enters registration information and collects fees from participants. Schedules the use of the recreation facility and athletic fields. Assists in program and activity delivery by working under the direction of a recreation specialist, recreation director, recreation coordinator, program supervisor, or manager. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Primary Responsibilities
Community Recreation Leaders are the first point of contact for recreation programs and services across the city. This position serves all ages but places a specific emphasis on young people.

Responsibilities include:


  • Frontline customer service and facility oversight.
  • Program development and implementation, in cooperation with other colleagues.
  • Youthwork in the form relationship development, mentorship, and ongoing support.
  • Problem solving and strategy is required to resolve conflict, de-escalate situations, and address community-based issues in real time.
Recreation Centers are public facilities that are open to everyone and specific emphasis is placed on ensuring our spaces are equitable and programs and services are representative of community interest.

Information specific to the permanent (certified) year round position: This position requires employees to work at least 20 hours per week which can include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. The Parks and Recreation Department hosts 26 Recreation Centers across the city in addition to program offerings held within spaces such as regional or passive parks and public schools. Recreation Leaders are typically assigned to a defined facility or program but are also expected to assist at other locations if a program need presents itself. Requirements

High school graduation or General Education Development certificate (GED) equivalency.

Preferred Qualifications: One year of a combination of post-secondary education, related volunteer work and paid work experience is preferred.

Assessment: Qualifications Rating
The Qualifications Rating is an assessment of your completed application and answers to Supplemental Questionnaire. Be as specific and detailed as possible in completing your application and questionnaire. You must submit your completed application and supplemental questionnaire by the application deadline.

GENERAL INFORMATION:

Eligible Lists created from Open Job Posting: This job posting is open to anyone who meets the position requirements. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. Those who pass the assessment will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.

Final Selection Process: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
