This position is part of a partnership between AmeriCorps VISTA and Community Options, Inc. Community Options is a leading national nonprofit supporting people with disabilities in housing and employment programs. AmeriCorps VISTA is a federal program that provides needed resources to nonprofit organizations and public agencies to increase their capacity to lift communities out of poverty. Community Options will sponsor 22 VISTA members to empower people with disabilities and to expand housing and employment opportunities across the country. Community Options supports more than 5,000 Americans with disabilities across ten states. VISTAs will partner with Community Options’ staff across eleven regions in New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, and Pennsylvania to provide self-advocacy and housing education. The project aims to improve economic success and stability for and alongside people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Member Duties : •Develop a self-advocacy-informed curriculum •Outreach to and recruit volunteers for housing education project •Support advisors and staff to identify people with disabilities who want to be involved in the housing education project •Develop systems and tools, and support the coordination of accommodations •Outreach to and recruit guest speakers and educators who are experts on affordable housing, disability rights, public speaking and community outreach •Meet with existing volunteers to better understand their service interests and goals; work with the Employment VISTA and Executive Director/supervisor to organize at least one volunteer service event or an event that provides education on disability services, history, or issues for volunteers each quarter •Work with the Executive Director/supervisor and Employment VISTA to improve agency volunteer experience and recruit new volunteers and supporters
