Job Title: Community Health Dental Hygienist
Department: Tohono O'odham Nation Health Care (TONHC)

Status: Exempt/Full-Time
Salary: $92,250.50 - $115,208.29/annually (DOE)
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the planning, coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of community and school-based oral health promotion and disease prevention activities serving the TONHC.
Scope of Work:
The purpose is to provide comprehensive oral health education and perform dental hygiene care for the consented students on-site at schools, Head Start Centers, and various locations throughout the Tohono O’odham Nation.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Depending on the area of assignment, an incumbent may not be required to perform some of the duties listed below):
- Performs oral health care and risk assessments, reviewing patient health history, screening, and evaluating oral disease and health.
- Perform routine treatment procedures, such as cleaning, applying sealants and fluorides, and related procedures.
- Document dental history or chief complaint; records and reports pertinent observations as appropriate.
- Performs patient triage and initiates patient care as appropriate for walk-in patients.
- Maintain required reports and records.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research, attending seminars, educational workshops, classes, and conferences, reviewing professional publications, establishing networks, and participating in professional societies.
- Provides coordination and support to the TONHC Director, Chief Dental Officer, and TONHC Health promotion Coordinators in identifying priority health issues with tribal and TONHC input.
- Represent the TONHC oral health program at meetings, conferences, and committees involving matters pertinent to health promotion disease prevention.
- Coordinates the steps necessary for the TONHC Dental Program to achieve and surpass Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) indicators related to oral health promotion disease prevention objectives.
- Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the Tohono O’odham culture, customs, and traditions.
- Knowledge of health literacy, marketing techniques, community needs assessment, program development, and process/impact/outcome evaluations.
- Knowledge of various populations' cultural, social, economic, and health characteristics and the ability to adapt resources and approaches to meet the special needs of rural and isolated settings of American Indian/Alaska Native populations.
- Knowledge of other hospitals, tribal agencies, local and regional resources to facilitate program and consultation.
- Knowledge of supplies, equipment, service orders, and inventory control.
- Knowledge of HIPAA-related rules and regulations.
- Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint) are, preferred
- Ability to respect cultural and traditional Native American beliefs.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment.
