We are a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Individuals with Developmental Disabilities, by providing Vocational and Community Living Services. We have been serving Individuals with Developmental Disabilities in San Luis Obispo County since 1957, when we first introduced our Vocational Training Program. In 2003, we partnered with NCI Affiliates, and while both agencies have their own identities, both have a single focus - promoting independence and inclusion for adults with intellectual and/or physical disabilities through vocational training, education and adaptive living skills programs, advocacy, and community living services.

Community Based Instructor Job Summary:

At Achievement House, a Community Based Instructor guarantees services received match the needs of our Individuals’ served and meet the company’s Service Design . Instructors provide training in community integrated settings that relate to the person centered goals of the participants in the community based program. This position has no supervisory duties.

Essential Duties Include:

  • Supply instructions and techniques as considered necessary by the Individual’s ISP.
  • Assist adults with developmental disabilities with socialization and life skills.
  • Teach and endorse the proper activities, along with the suitable use of time.
  • Coordinate, document, and review activity schedules for Individual’s served.
  • Instruct Individual’s on achieving and maintaining adaptive skills and suitable behaviors.
  • Provide counseling to maximize Individual’s growth and skill acquisition.
  • Provide behavior intervention as required.

Education / Experience:


  • A high school education or equivalent is required.
  • Previous experience working with developmentally disabled adults preferred.


Qualifying Specifications:


  • Must have own vehicle.
  • Must maintain a current California driver’s license.
  • Must provide on-going proof of current state required auto insurance.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record as determined by criteria established by the agency’s insurance carrier.
  • Must clear fingerprints through the California Department of Justice and the FBI.
  • Must successfully complete First Aid / CPR training (Training is offered onsite)


Physical Requirements:


  • Essential functions of this position require that employees regularly sit, stand, bend, twist and walk.
  • Employees may occasionally be required to lift or move up to 50 lbs.


Skills and Abilities Preferred:


  • The ability to have compassion, patience, good communication, resourcefulness, and the ability to make sound decisions.
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Reading, writing, basic math skills.
  • The ability to motivate others.
  • Flexible with work schedules and willing to help cover different sites as needed.
  • Bilingual preferred, but not necessary.
