Nature of Work in this Position: The primary responsibility of this position is to market StayWell P&C Commercial lines product for the successful acquisition of new business; maintain existing business relationships; and provide high quality service consistent with the StayWell brand. Support the P&C Underwriting team with general underwriting, portfolio underwriting review/analysis, discount and pricing adequacy, risk selection, coverage design/amendments and underwriting reporting.
Illustrative Examples of Work:
- Identifies potential customers for the company’s Property & Casualty insurance products and services; secure accounts through established company underwriting guidelines and policies.
- Gathers pertinent information; prepare quotation; provide detailed information and answer questions regarding quotes and close sales.
- Services clients to include delivery of documents, pick up of payments, and resolution of issues and similar efforts to ensure effective and personal service.
- Represents company at trade association meetings, local organization chapters, and other related events to promote StayWell products, develop personal contacts, and networking to facilitate marketing opportunities.
- Prepares, sales activity reports, sales correspondence, sales forecast, and other related reports as needed for commercial line business.
- Conducts study and comparative analysis of competing carriers, products, and services.
- Distributes promotional literature and offer pertinent information to consumers.
- Participates in the gathering, preparation, and procurement of materials for promotional purposes; provide administrative assistance in arranging for marketing presentation venues.
- Underwrite commercial and complex property and casualty insurance risks within the level of authority.
- Underwrite and evaluate new and renewal policies to maintain Company’s desired profitability and desired loss ratio while maintaining market competitiveness.
- Assess, evaluate, analyze applicants’ risk, data, renewals, repricing, restrictions, and cancellations to determine risk acceptability and coverage.
- Determine when additional information is needed to complete the evaluation of the risk.
- Evaluate policies with regards to the company’s underwriting standards.
- Provide detailed and timely communication to customers related to risk selection and decisions.
- Ensures appropriate premium and coverage are issued by applying appropriate underwriting guidelines and rating plan guidelines.
- Recommend appropriate adaptation of policies/guidelines to accommodate client specific or individual situations.
- Carry out responsibilities in accordance with company policies and applicable local and federal laws.
- Provides recommendations related to underwriting processes and decisions.
- Prepare reports that detail risk assessment findings that contribute to the final decision.
- Compare various policies having similar risk undertaking and conduct actuarial studies to decide on the company’s loss records.
- Performs related duties as required. (Related duties are duties that may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description, but that are within the general occupational series and responsibility level typically associated with the employee’s class of work.)
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:
- Strong analytical skills are a must
- Attention to detail
- Solid computer skills and use with MS Office Products
- Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
- Ability to independently resolve complex underwriting issues within state regulatory guidelines
- Experience with property and casualty insurance terminology
- Strong communication and decision-making skills and ability to train others
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to interface with diverse employee and customer groups is essential
- Skilled and knowledgeable interaction with various internal departments and external stakeholders
- Ability to use applicable computer systems, electronic tools and applications
- Ability to work independently and assume responsibility for projects across a continuum from routine to highly complex
- Demonstrate an understanding and support of corporate and departmental goals and initiatives
- Demonstrate ethical business practices with adherence to all privacy and confidentiality policies and regulations
Minimum Experience and Training:
Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Typical qualifications would be equivalent to:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. College Degree preferred but not required.
- Three (3) to Five (5) years of experience as a commercial underwriter
- Insurance designation desired
- P&C Sub Agent License required
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
