Commercial Fleet Mechanic (Vans, School Buses and Diesel Engines)
Job description
Position Summary:
The district transportation mechanic is responsible for the general maintenance of the district school bus fleet and minivans.
Competitive rate of pay.
Benefits include employer contribution to health insurance, paid vacation, and sick days. Contract runs on the fiscal year July 1 - June 30, pay and benefits pro-rated to start date.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma and/or ASE Certifications or degree in Automotive Technology in a related field from an accredited institution
- Minimum of 2 years experience working on commercial fleet vehicles: school buses and diesel engines as well as minivans.
- Maine Inspection License A,C,D,E eligibility
- CDL Class “B” license required with “P & S” endorsements eligibility
- ABS brake system knowledge required
- Air brake qualified
- Pass a drug test and submit to workplace drug testing
- Maine Department of Education fingerprinting certificate eligibility required
- Responsible for after hour service calls. Will be reimbursed hourly with a 3-hour minimum.
- Knowledge and compliance with all Board of Directors district policies
- Skills to inspect, repair and maintain vehicles and equipment
- Operate hand and power tools
- Perform basic mathematical calculations and work independently, literacy and communication skills required,
- Strong computer and technology skills required;
- Ability to prioritize, multi-task, and manage time efficiently required; and
- Ability to perform in a collaborative work environment required.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provide own mechanic tools required for the position.
- Maintain safety standards in conformance with state and insurance regulations.
- Advises the Transportation Coordinator and the Superintendent of Schools on-road or vehicle hazards.
- Work directly with the Transportation Safety Coordinator to include providing information for parts to be purchased and directly ordering required parts for specific situations for all Transportation needs.
- Diagnose codes for potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements.
- Prepare preventive maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Maintain mechanic tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
- Prepare documentation (e.g. repairs, maintenance records, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulatory guidelines.
- Replace and repair defective vehicle and equipment systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition.
- Inspect vehicles for the purpose of ensuring conformance to the Maine Department of Transportation and Maine Department of Education Standards.
- Perform minor bodywork (e.g. front ends, fenders, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining the appearance and safe operation of the vehicles.
- Participate in various activities (e.g. meetings, training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and conveying information.
- Develop recommendations for future transportation mechanic needs.
