JOB SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Sewer Collection Superintendent, delegates daily work tasks, plans, assigns, directs and inspects the repair, maintenance, and inspection programs relating to the City’s mains, service lines, and related appurtenances used in the collection and transmission of wastewater. Performs related duties as assigned and must stand in for the Collection Division Superintendent when necessary.

SPECIFIC DUTIES: The duties of this job include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Schedules inspections of sewers by work crews, determines methods and materials for repairing sewers; ensure adherence to proper procedures and safety standards. Coordinates the work of specialized crews, and specialized sewer cleaning, inspection and repair equipment.

2. Coordinates construction work done by department personnel or by private contractors; coordinates the work of City crews with that of privately contracted workers and equipment.

3. Meets with outside agency officials such as DEP and EPA representatives and cooperates with them on environmental concerns. Meets with personnel from neighboring townships to discuss flows originating from those townships into City sewer lines; remedy citizen complaints in a calm, courteous manner.

4. Plans, coordinates, and cooperates with departmental engineers and representatives of other City departments in scheduling repair work.

5. Assist the Superintendent in the preparation of informational reports on equipment for budgetary purposes; makes recommendations on the purchase of new equipment.

6. In the absence of the Superintendent, acts as reviewing officer for grievances and hearings in disciplinary matters; meets with City and union representatives to resolve labor problems.

7. Must respond to after-hour emergencies/call-outs; dispatch work crews and equipment needed; coordinate containment and remediation efforts of SSO’s if necessary.

8. Work with City of Erie Departments to implement and develop Geographical Information Systems (G.I.S.) platforms and application for corresponding utilities.

9. Manage stockroom inventory and control procedures.

10. Performs other duties of a similar nature as may be required.

Education:

Must have high school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of progressively responsible work experience in the general maintenance, installation, repair, of sewer systems and their components.

One (1) year of experience in a team/crew leadership capacity is preferred. Experience working with a unionized workforce.

The ability to use a variety of hand and power tools. Must be able to operate all department maintenance equipment including heavy equipment.

Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed. Familiarity with CassWorks software suite preferred.

Ability to physically perform the duties and to work in the environmental conditions required of a position.

Valid PA Class B CDL driver’s license w/airbrake and tanker endorsement.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $37,112.77 - $44,694.95 per year
