We need an energetic and motivated Code Enforcement Inspector willing to work hard and have fun while investigating possible violations of the city’s land use regulations. The Code Enforcement Inspector must be able to work with limited direction and is expected to interpret and explain city’s building, planning, and development regulations and procedures; analyze problems and identify alternative solutions; and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local rules, laws, and regulations.

General Function and Purpose:
As the Code Enforcement Inspector, you will work under the general direction of the Chief of Police for the investigation of possible building, zoning, and public nuisance code violations. The Code Enforcement Inspector will issue code violation warnings to property owners and coordinate all further enforcement actions with the city's Police Department or City Attorney for further processing.
Duties:
- Performs code enforcement duties in support of the Chief of Police and the City Administrator, including investigating citizen complaints and assessing potential code violations to determine proper enforcement actions
- Issue code violation warnings to property owners and coordinates all further enforcement actions with the city's Police Department or City Attorney
- Issue a stop order against any person in violation of the city’s building or zoning permitting regulation
- Determines code enforcement work procedures and expedites workflows, prepares project schedules; and recommends ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of building permit and code enforcement operations
- Ensures the maintenance of accurate and complete records of code enforcement activities
- Interprets, explains, and enforces city policies and procedures, building/land development codes specifications, and related ordinances
- Attends professional development workshops and conferences to keep abreast of trends and developments in the field of code enforcement.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
- Federal and state laws relating to building and code enforcement.
- Practices, policies, and procedures for regulating building construction, land use, and development
Skills to:
- Organize and manage many concurrent code enforcement projects
- Effectively communicate complex technical information to a diverse audience using a variety of methods
- Present information and recommendations in an oral and written form in a tactful, diplomatic, and professional manner to both the public and to city officials and organizations
- Negotiate and persuade others, obtain information, and build consensus to achieve common goals
Ability to:
- Exercise judgement and discretion regarding sensitive and confidential matters
- Establish and maintain effective working relations with other department heads and appointed officials, elected officials, administrative staff, city contractors, outside agencies and organizations, interest groups, and the general public.
- Develop and maintain positive community relations and public involvement
Other Minimum Requirements:
- Education / Experience: Four (4) years of municipal code enforcement, residential/commercial real estate building inspection, or closely related field. Education completed at a regionally accredited college or university with major or graduate coursework in Urban Planning, Construction
Management, Civil Engineering, Landscape Architecture, or a closely related field may be considered in lieu of experience.
- Certification: Registered “Code Enforcement Officer in Training” or licensed Code Enforcement
Officer preferred, but not required.
Job Hours:
Part-time, no more than 16 hours per week. Typical work week includes one 8-hour shift per week during regular business hours on Monday, with limited requirements to work an additional 8-hour shift per week during regular business hours Tuesday – Friday.
Compensation:
Minimum starting at $17.50 per hour, depending on qualifications.
Probationary Period:
This position requires a six-month probationary period to demonstrate the abilities and aptitudes to perform the duties of the job before permanent employment.
