POSITION SUMMARY:

Boston Medical Center's Project RESPECT program is seeking a Clinical Social Worker to support pregnant and parenting persons with Substance Use Disorder (SUD). The Clinical Social Worker will have a primary focus on increasing access to and retention in care for patients of color as part of a wider initiative for advancing health equity for pregnant womxn of color with SUD.

Under the supervision of the Project RESPECT Social Work Manager and as an integrated part of the Project RESPECT Clinical Team- the Clinical Social Worker will support patients and families in recovery in the ambulatory OB/GYN clinic, inpatient units, and in the community. Direct practice responsibilities include: completing psychosocial assessments and treatment planning, therapeutic interventions delivered in both group and individual formats, referrals to appropriate concrete resources, psychoeducation, and advocacy. The Clinical Social Worker will also work collaboratively with all members of the multidisciplinary team and with key community stakeholders to ensure wrap around care is provided to meet medical and behavioral health goals of patients.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Engage pregnant and post-partum persons with SUD with emphasis on increasing access for diverse populations of color; explain role and offer services in Project RESPECT outpatient clinic setting and other domains of care including: Boston Medical Center's Emergency Department and in-patient setting, as well as community facilities/programs when appropriate.
  • Complete psychosocial assessments and linkages to appropriate levels of care as needed. Create individual treatment plans based on psychosocial and treatments needs in collaboration with the patient.
  • Provide psychoeducation and assist in skill building on variety of topics including but not limited to: healthy relationships, bonding/attachment/attunement, child welfare involvement, trauma, anxiety management, and impulse control/affect regulation.
  • Ensures that patient and family remain apprised, involved, supported and treated through prescribed clinical relationship through scheduled contacts and whenever a change in care or plan requires more contact.
  • Consult and collaborate with healthcare team members to ensure that patient's medical and psychiatric needs are addressed. Participate in weekly clinical team meetings.
  • Facilitate weekly recovery support groups for pregnant and parenting persons at the Phoenix House residential treatment facility in Dorchester, MA with potential expansion to other community based sites.
  • Assist in completing and implementing a Plan of Safe Care (PoSC) authored by the client, for the client. The PoSC will meet the CAPTA requirements, highlighting the patient's progress and strengths with an outline of concrete supports.
  • Conduct community outreach to provide information on Project RESPECT services and connect with patients always with attention to possible safety risk for self, client, and colleagues. •
  • Establish and maintain an open communication with community-based organizations, other appropriate BMC departments, providers and services, and other potential resources.
  • Use language that conveys caring and is non-judgmental and utilize motivational enhancement techniques and motivational interviewing that helps encourage patients to identify and prioritize their personal needs.
  • Document patient encounters, resource development efforts, and other interventions for each patient, including date, time, and signature in the electronic medical record
  • Collect patient information and outcomes through state and grant required documentation; schedule and maintain tracking for all data collection appointments and deadlines, if applicable.
  • Complete clerical duties such as returning phone calls and providing reminder/follow up calls as needed.
  • Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights and privacy
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital policy
  • Utilize hospital's policies and standards as the basis for decision making and to support the hospital's mission and goals.
  • Maintain competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality care.
  • Obtains continuing education units necessary to maintain licensure.
  • Receives training and ongoing supervision on evidence-based treatment approaches for treating substance use disorders. Adheres to evidence-based treatment principles when providing support to patient and family to reduce the impact of substance use and other identified problems.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:
  • Requires Master's Degree from an accredited school of Social Work.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Must obtain Massachusetts Licensed Certified Social Worker within 90 days of hire, but candidates with LCSW/LICSW preferred.

EXPERIENCE:
  • Requires level of knowledge of Social Work process and community resources and agencies in relation to health, illness, and disability, generally acquired through one to two years on-the-job training.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of community resources and agencies that serve the children and families.
  • Experience with group therapy facilitation preferred
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with various healthcare professionals, to develop and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families, and to supervise graduate students.
  • Must be comfortable in a fast paced and dynamic work environment (sense of humor is valued).
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations. Bicultural/Bilingual competency preferred
  • Computer literacy with ability to use standard word processing, spreadsheet programs and e-mail (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Outlook) and web browsers.
