Chief Development Officer

Pathways Youth and Family Services is seeking a dynamic Chief Development Officer (CDO). This position is a senior member of the Pathways management team and reports to the President & CEO. They are responsible for managing all aspects of Pathway’s fundraising, communication and marketing efforts. Specifically, the CDO oversees corporate and individual giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, annual fundraising, grant writing, donor and fundraising events, donor stewardship and record keeping, marketing, branding, public relations, external communications, website development, management and enhancements, volunteer and community outreach and engagement, and all other elements of Pathways externally facing functions. This position is based at Pathways’ Houston office, works mostly remote with some office visits and travel to other office locations in Texas. Only candidates that live around the Greater Houston area will be considered.

What you will be working on (essential duties not limited to the following):

Key Responsibilities for Fundraising:

  • Develop and implement a strategic fundraising business plan with goals and measurements to establish development priorities including creating major gift opportunities, identifying verticals for corporate giving, establishing annual fundraising goals, timelines, and long-range plans to strengthen the organization’s giving program.
  • Build relationships and seek collaboration with key corporations, foundations, and individual donors.
  • Oversee and assist with execution of special events, annual fund drives, and direct mail campaigns.
  • Work closely with the President & CEO, CFO and Board of Directors to create and execute ongoing and Capital Campaigns.
  • Develop initiatives annually to attract new donors and retain regular donors.
  • Oversee grant writing, ensuring timely submission; reporting and data collection is performed accurately and professionally.
  • Achieve fundraising targets.
  • Maintain donor lists and information using a professional membership management tool to ensure donors are engaged, informed, and appreciated.
  • Identify new potential sources of funding using the latest trends and strategies including grant writing to augment funding for programs as well as ongoing and capital needs.
  • Maintain continuing and timely communication with the President & CEO, CFO, and Board of Directors, as appropriate, to ensure each is informed and involved in the promotion of fundraising efforts.
  • Ensure a monthly communication is distributed to all donors with updates, event information, and invitations to be involved with the organization.
  • Engage local leadership when appropriate in fund raising efforts.
  • Prepare monthly fundraising statements.
  • Hire and manage a team of development professionals.

Key responsibilities for Communication, Marketing and Website:

  • Plan and direct the overall communication strategy of the organization.
  • Create and oversee a new branding campaign for Pathways, including a new company logo, and website.
  • Develop and execute a public relations campaign to market the organization’s image to clients and the public.
  • Engage with local communities through events and presentations to build Pathways brand awareness.
  • Utilize an engagement and outreach campaign that includes social media, print, video and digital strategies.
  • Develop regular communications with internal staff and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee a marketing and communications team charged with implementing and managing strategies designed to expand Pathways’ external relationships and audiences.
  • Create, manage and analyze the ROI of the marketing and communications budget.
  • Ensure the organization has a dynamic, modern, up-to-date and accurate website at all times.
  • Ensure established and prospective donors can easily navigate the website for education and donation purposes.

Senior Leadership Team Responsibilities:

  • Participate in leadership team meetings and other related executive decision-making.
  • Manage direct report staff in accordance with organization’s human resource policies and procedures.
  • Provide leadership with updates of funding opportunities and brand awareness activities specific to Pathways’ locations.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required. Master’s degree and CFRE certification preferred.
  • Minimum of ten years of professional fundraising experience.
  • Experience recruiting, building, managing, and supporting an exceptional team.
  • Experience working with volunteers.
  • Experience writing, managing, reporting, and evaluating grant opportunities.
  • Knowledge of non-profit governance.
  • Ability to create a comprehensive strategic fundraising and communication plan.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Products and Raiser’s Edge.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Highly organized and enjoys a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong communication and writing skills.
  • Written samples of fundraising and communications or public relations strategies.
  • Expertise in budget and financial management.
  • Ability to present information concisely and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work assignments from a variety of staff, Board Members and volunteers.
  • Successful track record in relationship development and management.
  • Proven fundraising track record, and community engagement activities with individuals and the community in major metropolitan areas as well as rural areas.
  • Proven ability to work with donors and C-Suite executive volunteers.
  • Proven ability and willingness to solicit individuals one on one.
  • Demonstrated success in leading non-profit fundraising campaigns.
  • Demonstrated ability to hire, train, motivate, supervise and lead a professional staff.
  • Understands the non-profit culture with the ability to work collaboratively across the organization and gain the respect of a diverse team of peers and staff.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of digital engagement and its use in the integration of technology platforms and social media to enhance the overall fundraising strategy of the organization.
  • Can lead a productive meeting and engage in meaningful conversations.

Physical and Mental Demands
