The department manager serves as the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Department of Earth, Planetary, and Space Sciences (EPSS), and is responsible for short- and long-term business and financial planning to implement the department's administrative, academic, instruction and research support goals and mission. The CAO has full oversight responsibility for $35 million of operating and extramural funding, and directs all business operations, personnel functions, and building management for 120,000 square feet of research, instruction, and administrative space. The incumbent advises the department concerning resources and needs assessment, strategic planning, and policy and procedures, and represents EPSS to University administration and other units, and to external agencies and organizations. Promotes alumni relations and development activities, manages special programs and new initiatives, and ensures compliance with University and agency policies and procedures.

Required/Preferred

Five to seven years of management experience, leadership, and organizational skills in a university setting, with ability to relate to a diverse academic, research operation.

Required

Highly motivated, organized, and capable of managing by objectives with a broad perspective of organizational purpose and needs.

Ability to use independent judgment, exercise foresight, awareness and insight to anticipate issues or recognize problems as they occur, and the skills and knowledge to respond in an expeditious manner.

Demonstrated skill in management of space, equipment, and materials resources including development of utilization plans and justifying acquisitions.

Significant financial management experience to oversee complicated budgets with multiple funding sources, multifaceted physical facilities including teaching and research laboratories, shops, and complex administrative processes. Ability to correlate fiscal resources with programmatic needs, and to forecast and control income and expenses.

Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments, and follow through with minimal direction. Ability to perform effectively under conditions of frequent interruptions, fluctuating workloads, and conflicting time demands.

Communication skills and ability to interact with persons of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in an effective manner. Interpersonal skills to create an environment of cooperation, teamwork, and motivation.

Demonstrated skill in management of multi-function staff covered by a variety of personnel policies and union agreements. Ability to define staffing needs and position requirements, hire, train, and delegate work assignments, foster teamwork and good morale, evaluate performance, and administer and track corrective action.
