Job Duties:
- Administers prescribed medications and treatments as defined by state regulations in accordance with company policy and procedure under the direction of a licensed nurse
- A CMA may not:
- Administer the first dose of a new medication or a previously prescribed medication if the dosage is changed.
- Any new medication that arrives from the pharmacy without ensuring that it reflects the original prescriptions.
- As-needed medications
- Counting of controlled substances
- Any medication delivered by needle or by intradermal, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, intrathecal and intraosseous routes.
- Administration of medication that must be inserted into a nasogastric tube or gastric tube.
- Changing oxygen settings or turning oxygen on or off.
- Administer an inhalant medication.
- Regulate intravenous fluids or the programming of insulin pumps.
- Administer topical patches or topical medications that require a sterile dressing or assessment of skin condition.
- Administer sublingual medications.
- Administer any medication that requires a mathematical conversion between units of measurement to determine the correct dose.
- Verifies identity of resident receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on resident’s chart.
- Takes vital signs or observes resident to detect response to specified types of medications and prepares report or notifies designated personnel of unexpected reactions.
