The Childrens Guild is seeking an experienced Certified Medical Technician as an essential member of the school team providing health service delivery to students, overseeing health education, and medical management. Must have a presence within the designated setting and be highly visible to support all team efforts. Engagement with staff, students, and parents are essential. Must work closely with and support The Childrens Guild School Nurse. The Certified Medical Technician monitors student health and safety during behavior crises requiring restraints. The Certified Medical Technician manages student medical files including medication management, monitoring vaccinations, and documenting health suite visits daily.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain student health files including physicals, vaccination and immunization records, annual emergency form, and dental records.
  • Administers medication to students and ensures the school has proper documentation to administer medication in school with permission from the parent and physician under the direction of a Delegating Nurse (RN).
  • Evaluates and assess children and adolescents in the midst and after behavioral crises requiring restraints and/or therapeutic interventions under the direction of a Delegating Nurse (RN).
  • Responds to medical concerns within the school building.
  • Ability to synthesize data from multiple sources and implement a comprehensive nursing care plan for children, adolescents, and their families under the direction of a Delegating Nurse (RN).
  • Write notes and reports promptly including health suite visits.
  • Provides professional development to staff in areas of expertise or on specific health plans for students.
  • Attends individualized education program meetings as needed for students with health concerns.
  • Prepare and participate in medical record audits conducted by regulatory bodies under the direction of a Delegating Nurse (RN).
  • Inventory and maintenance of health supplies for the school program.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.

Competencies
To perform the job successfully, an individual will retain accountability for the following Key Result Areas (KRAs).
Key Result Area #1:* Health Service Delivery*

  • Open door policy exists to interface with staff and students that reflects a caring and welcoming environment in the health suite.
  • Monitors behavioral crises to determine the safety of students and staff.
  • Documents and sign all crisis intervention monitoring outcomes on the schools intervention report form.
  • Orders and maintains supplies, including first aid supplies for classrooms and the health suite.
  • Provides first aid to students and staff when necessary and documents in the online system or a nursing log notebook for staff.
  • Student illnesses and medical emergencies are tended to, log into the online student management system, and parents are contacted.
  • Collaborate with The Childrens Guild school psychiatrists and other medical staff.
  • Coordinate securing parent signatures on the Treatment Authorization forms at the beginning of each school year and as needed throughout the school year. Work with other administrative staff in charge of student intake and check existing charts to ensure all students have signed treatment consents.
  • Respond to parents medical questions and medication concerns as coordinated with the agency's psychiatrist.
  • Conduct health inventory of newly enrolled students (Schools).
  • Ensure that the immunization status/record of each student meets state regulations.
  • Measure the height, weight, and vital signs of students who are prescribed medication by a The Children's Guild's psychiatrist, or who have psychotropic medication administered at school.
  • Maintain medical charts for each student including emergency contact forms, physicals, immunization records, and other medical documents.
  • Acts as the schools liaison with pediatricians regarding physical illnesses with parent consent.
  • Coordinate completion of a Health Plan as necessary for students with Asthma, Diabetes, Epilepsy, and/or other health conditions following the guidance provided by the students pediatrician, per regulations.
  • Sends a medical notice to parents to follow up on a health condition (e.g., rash) or injury.

Key Result Area #2:* Health Education*

  • Assist in the promotion of the organization's health and wellness and nutrition policies.
  • Initiates health education projects for students and staff as necessary.
  • Participation as a trainer for medication certification.
  • Train classroom staff to administer medication on field trips.
  • Oversight of health fair for students.
  • Available to provide professional development to staff on health plans for students and medical topics.

Key Result Area #3:* Medication Management*

  • Maintain and track physician orders for each student and secure a medication refill as the supply runs low and before the supply runs out.
  • Receive medication from pharmacy and parents and log receipt of it.
  • Coordinate the receipt of a students medication with the parent.
  • Administer medication to students per physician order and as authorized by the students' parents documented on school forms, and documents daily administration on the online student record management system.
  • Comply with regulations regarding controlled substances, including conducting inventory checks, keeping controlled substances under double locks, and disposing of expired or unusable medication according to regulations.
  • Maintain the computerized medication list in the student management system.
  • Assist as needed with scheduling appointments for parents, etc., with a psychiatrist.
  • Facilitate communication of parent with agency's psychiatrist, as needed.
  • Assist the school psychiatrist in monitoring students and educating students, families, and staff about medication and medication side effects.
  • Participate in medication review meetings with a Psychiatrist as needed.
  • Administer injectables when prescribed or when directed by a physician and train the student to inject somatic medications under the direction of a Delegating Nurse (RN).

Key Result Area #4:* Other Miscellaneous Responsibilities*

  • Review medical policies and standard operating procedures annually as it applies to school programs.
  • Successful completion and demonstrated competency with the crisis management program.
  • Maintain the Wellness Bulletin Board, changing it every month.
  • Data is collected, summarized, and submitted when requested on medication monitoring/administration in compliance with organization policy.
  • Collaborate with clinical, psychiatry, and education staff members.
  • Provide monthly CQI reports to a designee in medication when requested.

Education and/or Experience

  • A minimum of two years post training experience in the provision of nursing services in a school setting.
  • A current license as a Certified Medical Technician in the state of Maryland without restriction by the Maryland Board of Nursing.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • A current license as a Certified Medical Technician in the state of Maryland without restriction by the Maryland Board of Nursing.
  • Certified or eligible for certification in CPR/First Aid.
  • Certified or eligible for certification in crisis management.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
