Summary

Graham Packaging is seeking a hands-on, result driven Business Unit (BU) Continuous Improvement Manager to oversee the Graham Operating System (GOS) Continuous Improvement Program and Employee Engagement for A3 Thinking, Daily Management, Problem Solving and Visual Factory at multiple plants within a Vertical Business Unit (VBU). The BU CI Manager is accountable for the education, engagement and effectiveness of the Vertical Business Unit Continuous Improvement (CI) behaviors and culture for waste elimination and productivity performance for the Plants in their assigned Business Unit. This role has the responsibility to teach and develop plant staff, front line supervisors and plant employees on continuous improvement methodology, tools, and root cause analysis to achieve sustainable improvements in the areas of safety, quality, delivery, cost and growth. Having ultimate ownership for personally delivering improvement initiatives and coaching others towards the future state of the Vertical Business Unit.
Responsibilities:
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • BU CI Manager is responsible for execution of GOS - CI Standards and PDCA Principles and Methodology within the vertical.
  • The VBU CI Manager is asked to support the deployment of Lean Manufacturing and Kaizen Methodology in all plants as required.
  • BU CI Manager is responsible for teaching and developing CI / Leadership core skills of the plant CI Managers, Plant staff, Front Line Supervisors, and Hourly Employees in the plants. Through the means of remote learning, on-site hands on-training and centralized CI regional hosted workshops.
  • BU CI Manager is responsible for partnering with the plants within the region to develop YOY performance improvement and cost savings strategies during the yearly AOP process, using A3 Thinking for (Strategic Goal Settings) and Daily Management (Tactical Action Based) controls to ensure each BU Plant success in OGSM commitments.
  • BU CI Manager is responsible for conducting monthly follow-up calls to ensure that all plants within the vertical are meeting their performance and profit goals are being met. To make sure the Plant Staff and Hourly Employees are actively participating problem-solving engagement and effectiveness. If plants need assistance, the BU CI Manager will support the plant in need of help in ensure Plant is set up for success.
  • BU CI Manager will assist in the scheduling of on-site activities that support all plants within the region in meeting cost-reduction targets set in the Annual Operating Plan.
  • BU CI Manager will support CI / Problem Solving activity for, chronic machine breakdowns, new products launch, significant customer complaint events, and any other critical business problem solving needs in the Vertical Business Unit.
  • BU CI Manager will provide on-site plant support when required if a plant is consistently underperforming to their AOP OGSM Targets.
  • BU CI Manager has responsibility of assuring their plants are being developed for sustainable problem-solving and continuous Improvement Behavior based Culture.
  • Responsible for ensuring the standards and principles defined in the corporate GOS System for CI are followed and completed in each of the plants and complies to the company expectations.
  • Position requires extensive travel and the ability to communicate to all levels of the organization, including the BU Directors, VPs, and Presidents.
Qualifications:
Core Proficiencies and Skills
The following skills and proficiencies are essential requirements of the position:
  • Strong understanding of Operational Excellence, Lean principals, statistics, and data analysis.
  • Rapid Changeover (SMED) experience using Lean tools, Standard Work, and Project Management tools.
  • Proficient at applying DMAIC or PDCA continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Deep knowledge in production line flow, yield and uptime analysis for improvement.
  • Knowledge of line design that optimizes line uptime i.e., throughput, queueing, accumulation, and bottleneck analysis.
  • Skilled at applying manual line measurements and other data collection methods and measurement methods to understand unit flow and loss characteristics.
  • Experienced in optimizing the performance of:
    • Factory systems and line process inputs
    • Information flow
    • Raw materials flow, conveyance, blending, and drying systems.
    • Blow Molder lines for throughput.
    • Injection Molding lines for capability.
    • Quality systems for defect elimination.
    • EHS systems for a safe working environment.
    • Operational systems for waste elimination.
    • People development for engagement and ownership.
  • Skilled in facilitation of Problem-solving including Problem Solving tools, FMEA, Kaizen, Lean Management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong coaching, mentoring, influencing skills.
Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • BS degree in Operations, Engineering, Manufacturing related.
  • Experience in a structured problem solving and continuous improvement mindset workplace.
  • At least 7 years of experience working in plant operations in multi-line manufacturing plant.
  • Experienced working in the plastics industry (Ideal).
  • Willing to Travel in the excess of 50%.
  • Six Sigma Certification is a Plus.

The standard compensation for this role is $121,200 - $175,100. Salary offers will be determined based on final candidate qualifications, experience, skillset, and other relevant factors.
Compensation Statement: The expected salary range for the position described in this posting is made in accordance with the legal mandates of certain jurisdictions within the United States. The final agreed-upon compensation is based on individual qualifications and experience. Benefits Statement: Benefits include medical, dental, vision and basic life insurance.
