Full Time Substitute - Bus Driver/Custodian/ Mechanic 1


General Definition of Work

Under general supervision, the position will include various duties included, but not limited to bus driver, custodial, and Transportation Services assignments. The position will be asked to step in various roles each day based on the needs of the school district. Primary responsibility will include first and foremost driving a school bus and/or car/van, helping a school with custodial duties due to a vacancy or long-term absence, and finally assisting at the bus garage. The position is 40 hours/week and twelve months per year. The position will qualify for full benefits and will report to the Transportation Director or principal of the school or their designee for daily assignments.


Qualification Requirements

  • Must have or obtain a Class B CDL with a N, P, and S endorsement (Must attend our next class)
  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and equipment employed in janitorial work
  • Some knowledge of cleaning procedures and the use of cleaning materials
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
  • Has a proven attendance record
  • High School diploma or equivalent required


Essential Functions

Follows all Surry County Schools rules, policies, and procedures

  • Complies with all traffic ordinances
  • Observes and follows all mandatory safety regulations for operating a school bus or van.
  • Reports undisciplined students to the designee at the school
  • Performs pre- and post-trip inspection as well as keeping the bus clean
  • Discharges students only at authorized stops
  • Reports all accidents and property damage
  • Must be able to comprehend directions while driving and the ability to use handheld technology
  • Empty trash, sweeps, mops, vacuums, strips, waxes, and buffs floor surfaces
  • Scrubs and cleans bathrooms , including toilets, mirrors, wash basins, urinals, commodes, sinks. Fill tissue, towels, soap and other dispensers, disinfects as needed
  • Clean sidewalks, entrances, grounds, mow, pick up trash, and snow removal
  • Dust furniture, walls, window sills, blinds, and other woodwork
  • Clean drinking fountains, walls, windows, woodwork, blinds, and light fixtures
  • Assemble and move furniture, clean and organize storage rooms
  • Unload if necessary, store supplies and deliveries
  • May open and secure buildings at start and end of the workday, may turn on and off lights at start and end of day, and adjust heating or air conditioning to appropriate levels
  • Raises and lowers flags at start and end of school day
  • Could perform minor maintenance on appliances
  • Operate fuel truck; loads fuel truck at bulk fuel facility; fuels buses located at schools on a scheduled assigned route; maintains accurate records of dispensed fuel and provides fuel accounting documentation directly to the Cost Clerk for entry into the State Vehicle Fleet Management System
  • Demonstrate a safety mindset at all times; safe buses for students, safe working environment for fellow workers and monitoring safe movements of school and activity buses while operating on public streets and highways are the paramount. Must be aware of and understand pertinent OSHA requirements.
  • Must be knowledgeable on how to change tires on vehicles and school buses
  • Must be able to complete paperwork including accurate parts inventory usage documentation
  • Performs minor vehicle maintenance, repairs, and replacements
  • Assists Mechanic II’s when needed
  • Obtain forklift certification for off-loading deliveries
  • Performs other related work as required


Physical Requirements

  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment and machinery including trucks, buses, riding mower, forklift, hydraulic lifts, etc.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of 50 to 100 pounds
  • Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work
  • Must be physically able to operate vacuum cleaners, carpet shampooers, brooms, leaf blowers, etc.
  • Requires climbing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motion. May require working on ladders.
  • Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using janitorial equipment.
