Position Overview
The Bioinformatician will process next-generation sequencing (NGS) data by utilizing and applying existing informatics, software resources, analysis methods on multiple computing platforms, in multiple programming languages, automating and managing repetitive tasks, developing and testing small-scale software modules, assisting in data management and delivery to clients, providing support for testing workflow code, and carrying out custom bioinformatics tasks, such as required and specified by the senior staff and supervisors.
Essential Duties
include but are not limited to the following:
- Implement, apply, maintain, customize available/known informatics resources and scientific software and data sources in multiple programming languages and platforms for research support; facilitate generally defined routine data processes, migration, organization, and management tasks and build project specific workflows to implement automated analysis steps.
- Investigate, customize, and prototype new bioinformatics resources and scientific software for biomedical data processing.
- Apply software engineering skills to create reusable, modular, tested, version-controlled, shared repository oriented, and professional quality informatics, software, and database resources.
- Design, prototype, and evaluate innovative computational algorithms, data analysis, and statistical methods for biomedical data processing; interpret and apply knowledge mining of data, computational algorithms, databases, scientific computing, and large-scale data analysis.
- Suggest and explore alternative or multiple data processing approaches.

Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Bioengineering or Computational Biology, or related field.
- 1+ years of related experience as outlined in the essential duties.
- 1+ years of experience in academic or industrial applied research environment in biomedical data analysis.
- Demonstrated proficiency in software development using multiple programming languages, such as Python, Java, and derivatives.
- Demonstrated proficiency using Linux/UNIX based systems and shell scripting.
- Demonstrated proficiency applying NGS workflow process and languages, such as Cromwell/WDL and/or Snakemake.
- Demonstrated proficiency with cloud computing (e.g. AWSDemonstrated ability to analyze gene expression, genotyping, sequencing, CGH, or in specific field needed by the duties and various biomedical databases.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully download, learn, and apply software and database resources for custom analysis and build workflows.
- Demonstrated understanding of scientific computing and data visualization tools, such as MATLAB/R, and of basic statistics.
- Demonstrated ability to use multiple programming languages, databases, computational methods, scientific computing, large scale data analysis, and heterogenous biomedical data from multiple sources.
- Demonstrated understating of software engineering processes, such as version control, backup, documentation, testing, and validation.
- Demonstrated understanding of and ability to implement computational algorithms, statistical analysis methods, and custom data analysis software.
- Demonstrated familiarity with large-scale data analysis and utilization of high-performance computing systems and parallel programming.
- Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the Essential Duties of the position with or without accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Bioengineering or Computational Biology, or related field as outlined in the essential duties.
