Job Summary


Tele work may be considered and a tele work agreement would need to be signed.

The purpose of the position is to serve as the agency-wide coordinator for a Building Information Modeling (BIM) defined process and the use of technology to embed business information into 3D/4D/5D CAD civil engineering models for downstream transfer into other agency business systems. It promotes agency adoption of BIM methodologies, provides high-level management and supports its adoption in the MnDOT project business lifecycle: Scoping> Planning> Design > Letting/Bidding> Construction/Inspection> Asset Management> Planning. Effective outcome of that work will result in an agency Common Data Environment (CDE) data management that reduces duplication, improves reliability, provides timely access while maintaining security.

As the agency-wide BIM expert, you will investigate and seek to improve data connection and exchange between business-technology systems. Four goals of this position are: (i) agency adoption of BIM methods and technologies to facilitate use of electronic CAD/BIM models as project data containers for use in downstream business processes or systems; (ii) exchange of project specific data between CAD/BIM models with other agency business technology systems (AASHTOWare, P6, TAMS, CHIMES, SWIFT, CAATS); (iii) advance digital program delivery and management by modernizing MnDOT letting/bidding from paper/PDF plan sets to the use of electronic models as contract objects; (iv) improve agency management of authoritative business information by migrating document-based project content into tabular or geo-spatial data systems for agency wide secure data search, reporting and analytics.

The position holder will maintain awareness of MNIT managed technology platforms with respect for data storage, data management, access management that may affect internal and external project partner business activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years advanced professional in the areas noted below:

Three years of advanced para-engineering experience (Engineer Specialist/ Engineer Specialist Senior or equivalent) in the areas noted below:

NOTE: Either qualifying scenario above must explain the respective years of experience in the following areas below:

  • Experience researching and analyzing system functionality and business processes in order to propose/develop business best practices and procedures;
  • Experience with strategic planning, operations and risk assessment/management;
  • Experience documenting and conveying system functionality and enhancements to consultants and Mn.IT staff (information technology staff);
  • Experience applying the concepts of: engineering phases: civil-design, construction-inspection, civil public work projects-construction management sufficient to analyze each engineering function in AASHTOware system modules and data management systems;
  • Experience with MicroStation/GEOPAK software for design, AASHTOWare Project and GIS systems for asset management and spatial data query/reporting, MnDOT Pay Items and Asset Systems;

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with civil data exchange schema’s : XML, Land XML, etc.; BIM International Foundation Class (IFC); and, BIM Bentley i-model (Digital Twins);
  • Knowledge of e-Signature solutions and other data-authentication or data-validation technologies or methods;
  • Non-developer knowledge of Oracle or SQL database concepts including data warehouse;
  • Non-developer knowledge of API’s, Open API’s and as data exchange methods between applications.
