Department Summary
Campus Planning and Facilities Management (CPFM) is a vibrant department, which comprises five units, and approximately 270 employees: Facilities Services, Utilities & Energy, Campus Planning, Office of Sustainability, and Design & Construction. The units of CPFM strives to provide excellent customer service to the University of Oregon campus and operates with the highest professional standards, communicating and collaborating with customers to support the stewardship of the campus.
Facilities Services (FS) is responsible for the management of human, financial and material resources, the development and implementation of programs, policies and procedures related to the operation, maintenance, repair and minor renovation of university buildings, grounds and infrastructure systems. These services provide the University of Oregon community with a safe, efficient, reliable, functional and aesthetically pleasing learning environment in support of the University’s mission and vision.
Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to service, maintain, and repair all fleet vehicles, motorized, and mobile equipment used by University of Oregon personnel. The fleet of vehicles and equipment includes passenger cars, pickups, vans, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, garbage trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors, school buses, electric vehicles, air compressors, portable and stationary generators, welders, rollers, mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, rototillers, turf vacuums, chainsaws and miscellaneous powered and non-powered equipment. Interactions/contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies.
The Auto Mechanic 1 will focus on preventative maintenance (oil changes, rotating tires, checking brakes, exhaust system and electrical system) and performing simple repairs such as adjusting or replacing clutches, minor tune-ups, and replacing head lights. As employees in this class advance in proficiency they may, under the close supervision of higher skilled technicians, perform more complicated repairs. This position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks under the oversight of Automotive Mechanic 2s in the department. Decisions may be made about the best method and materials necessary to perform a particular task with the guidance of higher skilled technicians, lead worker, and the departmental supervisor. Setting priorities, assessing customer needs and responding to those needs will be done by the lead worker and/or Associate Director. Interactions/contacts may occur with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies. These interactions will be under the supervision of the lead mechanic or Associate Director.
The Auto Mechanic 2 may be responsible for conducting trainings with other University staff and students with mechanized vehicles and equipment. This position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently. Decisions may be made about the best method and materials necessary to perform a particular task. They may also include setting priorities, assessing customer needs and responding to those needs. Interactions/contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies.
Work is reviewed regularly by the Associate Director of Environmental Services to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.
Driver’s Certification:
It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.
Essential Personnel:
This unit may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.
Minimum Requirements
- Two years of mechanic experience diagnosing and performing routine repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR
- Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and one year of mechanic experience.
Minimum qualifications for the Auto Mechanic 2 level:
- Four years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience diagnosing and performing a variety of complex repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR
- Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and three years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience.

- ASE Master Certification in Automotive
