Salary Range: $225,000 - $260,000

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Assistant Vice President (AVP) for Public Safety Administration will report to the Vice President of Public Safety. In this position, the AVP will join the Vice President of Public Safety to oversee a department reflective of the values of an inclusive educational and working environment on campus, while building relationships and collaborating with students, faculty, and staff in support of a positive campus experience for all Columbia University community.

Responsibilities

As a key member of the Vice President’s leadership team, they will handle a wide range of matters of institutional importance and be responsible for the central coordination of various functions and activities within the department of Public Safety. The AVP will assist in providing leadership and direction in strategic planning and administrative initiatives, both within the department and with key campus constituencies, and will provide special project oversight as assigned. As a member of the departmental leadership team, this role will provide outreach and mentorship to key staff and coordinate overall professional development and team building activities for the Department.

At the direction of the Vice President, this role will oversee and monitor linkages with other senior leaders to ensure responsiveness to other departments and offices. They will maintain oversight for select projects supporting the Vice President to ensure that all are effectively moving according to planned objectives and established milestones and measurement criteria.

The AVP will execute senior leadership strategies to effectively address emergent issues, garner appropriate resources, and resolve issues before they require escalation. At the direction of the Vice President, they will execute strategic objectives in collaboration with all units within the Department. The AVP will oversee the effective use of technology systems and forecast the department’s technology needs and leverage the latest system which can enhance the safety of the campus community and the efficiency of the department.

The AVP monitors and identifies the high liability areas of the department and University and offers input for solutions and policy changes as needed.

The AVP will be expected to play a major role in creating the department’s strategic plan. They will be a member of a senior team in the department overseeing and implementing the departmental goals as established.

Please Note : Subject to remain on duty beyond scheduled hours or be recalled to duty up to 24 hours per day, seven days a week during emergency situations or other extensive periods. May require some travel.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of 10 years of high-level experience in progressively responsible administrative roles in support of university campus/police safety administration and use of technology in a public safety setting, including experience in Finance and Budgeting.

Demonstrated strong executive leadership skills at a large-scale, complex organization with analytical ability and experience with strategic planning processes, including significant organizational change management initiatives.

Proven track record of successful program and/or project management in an educational, and/or public safety or campus service context.

Experience building partnerships at the most senior levels of an organization and an ability to work in support of the mission, traditions, and culture of a university. Experience working with unionized labor workforce.

Prior experience collaborating with high-level executives in a dynamic environment.

Proven track record of the ability to think strategically while planning, organizing, coordinating and directing multiple projects and activities with varied deadlines in support of a complex agenda.

Proven ability to maintain a “global” view while recognizing the importance of a close attention to detail.

Demonstrated ability to exercise exemplary judgment and ensure the utmost discretion and confidentiality in all matters.

Highly results oriented; Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to interact with diverse internal and external constituents.
