JOB SUMMARY

The assistant project manager (APM) role is a training position. The APM works closely with a senior project manager (SPM) or project director (PD), performing most duties and assisting others with supervision. All projects managed by APM shall be assumed to be managed without the use of a project engineer unless granted explicitly by the vice president of operations so that more time is spent by APM training on the various job duties rather than delegating. The basic managerial steps apply: Goal-Setting, Supervision, Managing, Planning, Communicating, Organizing, Implementing, and Tracking.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

Leadership

  • Schedules and assists SPM at project goal-setting meetings with Owner and Architect
  • Takes charge and exhibits sound judgment at the appropriate time, whether on-site or in the office
  • Able to define critical project goals with some assistance
  • Provides/gets support from their superintendent
  • Should be paired with an experienced superintendent, when possible
  • Maintains even ground with most vendors under most situations

Planning

  • Responsible for following pre-established company project ground rules, may make recommendations to senior project manager for deviation from established rules
  • Assists and may take the lead in implementing field plans
  • Provides environmental analysis indicating trends, opportunities, threats, weaknesses anticipated in each project
  • As directed by SPM, develops and distributes meeting agendas in advance
  • Sets target dates, SPM approves and monitors
  • Keeps meeting minutes and distributes copies to Management Team members
  • With Estimating, scopes bids for completeness before award of subcontracts by SPM
  • Participates and contributes to job turn-over meetings with SPM, scheduled by the estimator, for the purpose of Q&A with an estimator about job specifics

Communication

  • Implements Company s Communication Plan for the project
  • Ensures that field staff is in possession of all required contract documents and software
  • Issues all directives in writing, leaving nothing to guesswork or misinterpretation
  • Able to personally identify then log and track time-sensitive documents and submittals
  • Capable of drafting a professional business letter, report, or presentation

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years in construction serving as a project engineer or related experience desired
  • Working knowledge of construction methods and understanding of contract documents and how they relate to each other
  • Computer skills in various construction and office-related software systems, including contract management and scheduling software

Education/Licenses/Certification

  • B.S. in Construction Science, Civil Engineering Architecture, or other related degree

  • Self-starter, does not require daily supervision to accomplish assigned tasks

  • Tracks goals vs. actual on reports
  • Practices WE have a problem
  • Strives for objectivity, fairness, reason, and consistency
  • Documents each step of re-direct and ensures communication
