About the Department of Counseling

John Carroll University has two CACREP-accredited counseling programs, Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Together, the two programs form the largest overall graduate program at John Carroll with current enrollment of approximately 200 students. The Department is committed to a culturally diverse faculty and student body. Specifically, the Department prepares students to be multiculturally and globally competent citizens and counselors who deeply understand issues of race, inclusion, privilege, and oppression. In addition to supporting the sharing and teaching of different points of view and exposing students to underserved communities in Northeast Ohio, the Department offers a faculty-led study abroad opportunity in Vietnam. In 2017, the Department of Counseling was awarded a $1.3 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration to support and expand the training of students in underserved communities.

The department specializes in training students in Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Counseling through two programs. In the SUD Concentration, Clinical Mental Health Counseling students take three SUD electives that allow them to be eligible for the Licenced Independent Chemical Dependency Counselor credential. Separately, the SUD Certificate program enables participants to earn a chemical dependency credential in the State of Ohio.

Courses in the department are offered in a mix of in-person, online, and hybrid format. In the Fall 2022 semester, the Department launched a fully online, cohort-based version of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program. Students in this program moved through the program at an accelerated pace with a curriculum mapped out by the faculty to ensure graduation in two years, and they will complete two in-person residencies during that time.
