This is a Curricular Support Animal Health Technician position assigned to the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center with a variable schedule. The shift for this position is primarily Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00am-6:00pm, although hours may be subject to change.

Under the direction of the Small Animal Teaching Colony and Shelter Animal Coordinator, in concert with the Facility Veterinarian and the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center Manager, provide care for the animals housed in the Gourley Clinical Teaching Center (GCTC) kennels and all animal holding areas, including the barn facility. Majority of day-to-day responsibilities will center around the care for the GCTC Teaching Colony felines and canines and shelter patients participating in didactic labs, as well as maintaining a clean, disinfected, and orderly facility while upholding all policies, regulations and laws governing the care and use of animals in teaching. Provide regional transport of animals and specimens. Independently perform and/or assist students in administering medications and treatments as prescribed by clinicians and according to protocols. Support instruction in disinfecting and maintaining facilities and equipment, preparing for labs and assisting with management of the teaching colony.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Must work in an environment where animals are used in teaching and research.
  • Contact with animals, including the restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) is required.
  • Stand for extended periods of time; walk, crouch, and kneel throughout the shift.
  • Walk and/or control large or unruly dogs, horses and livestock.
  • Lift animals and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Maneuver and move animals on and off gurneys, into and out of cages, stalls and holding pens, and transfer heavy equipment from one area to another.
  • Valid CA Driver’s License required.
  • Position will participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Pull Notice System.
  • Position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University policy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Work in high traffic areas with constant noise from animals and people in a fast-paced, constantly changing, and heavy volume patient-care environment.
  • This is a position with rotating shifts, and work hours/days are assigned based on program needs. Normal daily work schedule is 8 hours per day.
  • Required to work variable hours on short notice, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, covering staff shortages and holiday shifts. Good attendance habits are crucial. Vacations may be restricted during the academic year.
  • Work in an environment where animals are used for teaching.
  • Work with animal cadavers and in animal shelter environments.
  • Work with preserved animal specimens.
  • Work under regular exposure to loud sounds, animal odors, zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, and cleaning chemicals necessary for an animal hospital environment.
  • May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught students and staff.
  • May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
  • Drive large-sized animal transport vans between various locations on and off campus on a daily basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
:
  • Experience working with a wide variety of animal species (including, but not limited to: dogs, cats, horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, ferrets, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and rodents) in a hospital or clinical environment.
  • Experience administering medications by oral and parenteral routes.
  • Experience with cleaning and disinfection protocols consistent with those in an animal hospital or clinical environment.
  • Experience cleaning, feeding and housing of laboratory animals, small and large companion animals, exotics, and food animals, especially as it applies to a clinical environment.
  • Experience handling and restraining various animal species, including lab, small and large companion, exotic, and food animals.
  • Experience driving oversized vehicles sufficient to safely transport animals between various on and off campus locations on a daily basis.

  • Knowledge of common diseases associated with small and large domestic animals.

Preferred
:
  • Experience conducting behavioral assessments on dogs and cats.
  • Familiarity with IACUC protocols and policies governing animal use and welfare.
