Reports to: Accounting Director

Primary Purpose:

This position is responsible for managing Accounts Payable and portions of the General Ledger, and assisting with projects for the accounting and finance function of the Houston SPCA, while reporting to the Accounting Director.

The Accountant will work in finance and in cross functional teams to manage new projects and programs, and ensure best practice financial and accounting processes. This position combines strong knowledge of finance and accounting.

Essential Functions of the Position:

• Adhere to the organization?s financial operations and accounting practices based on generally accepted accounting principles; ensure transparent financial information and ethical behavior standards; advise staff on organization?s financial policies and procedures.
• Manage the Accounts Payable full cycle function, including the reconciliation of all vendor statements.
• Assist the monthly close process, for the organization.
• Responsible for recording cash receipts, and deposits to the organization.
• Working with the development team to reconcile and record donations each month.
• Responsible for the reconciliation of some key general ledger accounts, for the organization.
• Manage offsite document storage.
• Responsible for the reconciliation of payment processing systems, company credit cards and corporate P-cards.
• Serve as a principal steward of the organization?s resources, ensuring that all resources are utilized properly, legally and ethically.
• Ensure compliance with all regulatory and business practices related to financial management.
• Support the Accounting Director during the independent audit, and provide any supporting documents required for the Audit & 990 tax return.
• Work closely with the Accounting Director as it pertains to preparing ad hoc reports.
• Protects all confidential information, including donors, clients, animals and internal communications.
• Performs additional responsibilities as assigned.
