Position Title: Dean of Students Incumbent:

Reports to: Middle School Principal FLSA Status: Exempt Days: 218

QUALIFICATIONS

Requires the following (or equivalent qualifications):
  • Master’s Degree in School Administration, Educational Leadership, or equivalent
  • State of Iowa Evaluator Approval
  • Five years of successful teaching experience

POSITION PURPOSE

To work in partnership with principal, assistant principal and staff in collaboration with students, home and community to provide a safe and productive educational atmosphere at the high school in an effective and efficient manner.

SUPERVISION

This position assists the high school principal and associate principals in supervising professional teaching staff and support staff.

PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITIES

Protects the confidential nature of information concerning the school program, students in the programs, and individuals involved in the programs.

Resolves student discipline problems, administers the Student Code of Conduct, and maintains student discipline records.

Establishes effective communication with students, parents, and staff regarding attendance, academic achievement, citizenship, family relationships, and other problems.

Works with staff, students, parents, and community on matters regarding student excessive absenteeism and truancy.

Participates as a member of the Administrative Team and contributes ideas and recommendations as to the direction of the district.

Administers high school rules and regulations and makes recommendations for improving and revising rules and regulations.

Assists in communicating and maintaining academic standards required for progressive student achievement.

Assists in communicating and maintaining citizenship standards necessary to establish a safe and productive educational atmosphere.

Conducts evaluations of professional teaching staff as assigned by the high school principal.

Works one-on-one and in small groups with students regarding academic achievement, citizenship, and school to work transition and personal matters.

Provides advocacy services, including enrichment activities, career education, discipline, guidance, and counseling, to students and parents.

Communicates with community agencies to promote programs for school.

Works in collaboration with community agencies, including Family Health Services, Department of Human Services, law enforcement officials, and juvenile justice officials, regarding school-student related situations.

Assists in developing master schedule.

Assists in registration, scheduling, and orientation of new students.

Attends board meetings as requested to serve as a resource person to the Superintendent and Board.

Build and manitain schedules for middle school activities

Performs other duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Excellent human relations, verbal and written communications skills, including ability to make presentations. Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Proven supervisory skills such as organizing and coordinating. Ability to relate positively with staff, parents, and students. Demonstrated ability to produce results through previous assignments. Ability to effectively monitor and evaluate students and staff. Demonstrated leadership skills and a desire to lead. Ability to establish and maintain a safe and productive learning atmosphere.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL EFFORT

Continuous speaking, hearing, and visual effort. Frequent walking, sitting, standing, reaching, and climbing. Occasional kneeling and transporting up to 50 lbs. Close mental and visual attention. Work involves repetitive and varied tasks.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Occasionally exposed to dust, odors, and other irritants. Stress associated with work pace and pressure. Work involves irregular hours and days. Some travel required. Exposed to hazards of the road when driving.
