EH&S Technician

Purpose of the Position:

This position is responsible for working on a variety of EH&S programs including encouraging compliance with regulations, providing guidance on safety measures, and communicating cross-functionally about incidents and expectations. Activities include, but are not limited to, risk management, internal audit, accident prevention, and hazardous waste management. This position is vital to maintaining the health and safety of all our workers at Wabash.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Assist with maintaining EH&S programs that ensure compliance with federal, state, local regulations, and Wabash policies relating to safety and the environment.
  • Assist with and maintain all required environmental permits for the process, equipment, or discharges generated at the facility.
  • Provide guidance and support to management on EH&S issues.
  • Work closely with all levels of employees to establish, maintain, and improve EH&S programs.
  • Develop a thorough knowledge of equipment and materials used in the facility, including pollution control devices.
  • Promptly notify EH&S Manager and appropriate operations supervisor of potential enforcement issues, accidents, or control device malfunctions.
  • Aid in the timely preparation of required reports to regulatory agencies as requested.
  • Assist with procedures/SWIs to reduce safety/ environmental risks and to address emergency situations.
  • Review materials used by manufacturing operations and maintain SDS database.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and organized recordkeeping system so that the facility can verify compliance with all applicable regulations.
  • Ensure responsible parties are immediately notified of EH&S concerns and action is immediately taken.
  • As appropriate, assigned, retain, and oversee vendors, contractors dealing with EH&S issues.
  • Provide mentorship and training to new hires.

  • Provide back-up support for other roles as necessary.
  • Available for overtime on a scheduled or call-in/call-back basis, as necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager/supervisor.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

  • Associate's/Bachelor's Degree (Preferred Major: Health, Environmental Science, Industrial Science)
  • Self-motivated with ability to allow constructive feedback to grow in position.
  • Experience in accident prevention and first aid.
  • Ability to follow proper quality and workplace safety procedures and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a team environment.
  • Ability to use computer software or be trained.
  • An established track record of reliability.
  • Driven to continually grow and develop your role.
  • Ability to adapt and accommodate to change.
  • Detail Oriented.

This job operates within a manufacturing plant environment. Safety, environmental and health concerns may demand constant attention. While performing the duties for this job inside the plant, the employee is frequently exposed to normal working conditions for a manufacturing plant with a noise level that is moderate to loud noise. The roles defined through Wabash may routinely use machinery equipment, forklifts, computers as well as laboratory instrumentation and tools, both manual and automatic.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee may be required to stand for extended periods of time as well as use hands or fingers to reach or handle, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee will frequently lift and/or move up to 50 or more pounds. All vision abilities are required to encompass close-up work. On occasion, employees must be able to tolerate and endure extended seasonal hours and maintain alertness to meet deadlines.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to machinery and moving parts, airborne particles including grain dust and hazardous materials or fumes, which may require the use of PPE. The employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions, extreme temperature changes in the plant from normal temperatures to above normal temperatures, extended seasonal hours, high precarious places and confined spaces. The noise level in some of the work environments may require the use of hearing protection.
